The Bible in the Light of Religious Science
()
About this ebook
Religious Science is psychological, metaphysical, mental, spiritual, idealistic and practical. It is psychological as it deals with the operations of the human mind, meta-physical as it shows the human mind to be an extension of the Divine Mind. The human mind is an instrument through which the Divine Mind functions on the plane of individual life.
Every man is in search of Truth, of something that will make him happy, certain of himself and of life. The very fact that everyone is seeking Truth proves that it exists for all. The universe plays no favorites, has no pets. The Truth is free to all and “whosoever will, may come.”
Strange as it may appear, the Bible contains a key to health, happiness and success. It promises more than any other book ever written. It tells how to obtain and what to avoid. When understood, the Bible is a scientific text book.
The two great teachers of the Bible are Moses and Jesus. Moses taught the universal law of cause and effect. Jesus tells us of a direct relationship between God and man. One is not complete without the other. Both teachings are necessary. We are individuals living in a universe of law and order; a perfectly balanced, normal viewpoint, connecting life with living, is, in the last analysis, what we are all seeking.

THE BIBLE IN THE LIGHT OF RELIGIOUS SCIENCE

FOREWORD
Religious Science is the science of mind and Spirit, a culmination of the age-long search for Truth. Those responsible for this movement lay no claim to any special dispensation of Providence, not a special revelation of Truth. Religious Science contains the best thought of the ages and presents this thought in a manner that can be understood by all.
Religious Science is mental since it deals with the law of mind, the most subtle energy known. It is spiritual because it reveals a Universal Spirit inherent in all things. It is idealistic, teaching the greatest ideals ever perceived, and practical because it provides a way by which one may attain these ideals.
Religious Science is a science of correct thinking and living. Being a science of correct thinking it is a science of health, happiness and success; of peace, poise and power, satisfaction and attainment. It is the Science of Being.
Every man is in search of Truth, of something that will make him happy, certain of himself and of life. The very fact that everyone is seeking Truth proves that it exists for all. The universe plays no favorites, has no pets. The Truth is free to all and whosoever will, may come.
We see an abundance in the universe. The ocean is filled with fish. We cannot count the grains of sand on the shore. The earth contains untold riches and the very air is vibrant with power. Why, then, is man weak, poor and afraid? Religious Science answers these questions.
The Divine Plan is one of freedom; bondage was not God-ordained. Freedom is the birthright of every living soul. All instinctively feel this. The Truth points a way to freedom under law.
What is Religion? The dictionary tells us that religion is a man’s belief in God or gods. Everyone believes in some kind of a god, therefore, everyone has some kind of religion. In so far as anyone’s belief in God is correct his religion is true and pure, no matter what outward form it takes.
We need not be afraid of religion. What we wish to avoid is not religion, but dogmatism and superstition. We avoid these by keeping faith with reason, for she converts the soul to reality, gives peace to the understanding and joy to the heart.
We all wish to be scientific for science is exact knowledge, and knowledge gives power. We live in a scientific age, therefore in an age of greater recognition of truth. Whatever is true in any religion constitutes the science of that religion. We need a science of religion and a religion of science.
Psychology is the study of the human mind. We all desire to understand how the mind works. Everyone should be, to some degree, a psychologist. It is one of the most interesting, fascinating and practical studies known.
Metaphysics is the study of the relationship between the human and the Divine Mind. It is an extension of psychology and a logical one. We could not have human minds unless there were a First Mind behind ours.
What does it mean to be spiritual? Spirituality is common goodness, human kindness, natural truth, brotherly love and heavenly worship. To be spiritual is to be normal. All people are spiritual part of the time; some people are spiritual nearly all of the time.
An idealist need not be an empty-minded dreamer but one who sees a greater possibility in the things he does. Our best artists, poets, writers, statesmen, philosophers and business men are all idealists along their own lines.
Strange as it may appear, the Bible contains a key to health, happiness and success. It promises more than any other book ever written. It tells how to obtain and what to avoid. When understood, the Bible is a scientific text book.
But the Bible presents its truths in a mystical manner; its meaning is hidden behind story and fable, word pictures, and figures of speech. We must seek its hidden meaning and reveal the purpose underlying its teaching.
The Bible is a book pointing a way to freedom under law, to guidance under love, to revelation through reason. Let us approach its study with this in mind and much will become clear which, otherwise, seems confusing.
In compiling the following pages an endeavor has been made to avoid details, repetition and dogma, and to incorporate passages from The Grand Old Book,
which time cannot change nor environment alter; for, built upon the rock of changeless and eternal Reality, self-evident truths cannot be shaken.
The Bible is a compilation of writings extending over a period of many hundreds of years. The following excerpts have made a strong appeal to me because of their uplifting character and I feel that students of Religious Science will find them to be a constant source of spiritual strength and enlightenment.
The Bible was written by human beings whose thought was reaching toward Ultimate Reality, and, if it is to be understood, it must be read with the same motive. Always, the mind that writes is the mind that reads, for there is but One Mind in the universe and all inquiry into Truth is an inquiry into this Mind.

READINGS FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
READINGS AND INTERPRETATIONS OF PASSAGES FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT
FROM THE STORY OF CREATION
THE CREATION
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
And God said, Let there be light; and there was light.
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit.
After his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth; and it was so.
And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit,
Whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life,
And fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, Cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind,
And everything that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:
And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
And over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him;
Male and female created he them.
And God blessed them, and God said unto them,
Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:
And have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
And over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, It was very good.
GENESIS—One.
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created,
In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
And every plant of the field before it was in the earth,
And every herb of the field before it grew:
GENESIS—Two.
THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN BY HUMAN BEINGS
In studying the Bible we should remember that it was written by men; men with minds like ours. It is an attempt to set down their thoughts about God, man, and creation and the relationship between the visible and the invisible.
We shall understand the Bible only when we approach it as a whole, and discover the thread of unified teachings running through its different texts.
We shall approach our study with the idea in mind, that we are working out a philosophy of life, which deals with man’s relationship to Spirit.
