TL;DR Shakespeare - SparkNotes
The Tempest explores the consequences of European settlement in the New World through the story of Prospero, an exiled ruler who uses magic to restore his daughter, Miranda, and himself to power. To achieve his ends, Prospero must force a confrontation with Alonso, the king who engineered his ouster, by shipwrecking Alonso on the island that Prospero and Miranda share with their servants Ariel and Caliban, and manipulating the romance that blossoms between Miranda and Alonso’s son, Ferdinand.
Main Characters
Prospero: The usurped Duke of Milan and father of Miranda who spends years banished on an island refining his powerful magic.
Miranda: The loyal daughter of Prospero who was brought to the island at an early age and has never seen any men other than her father and Caliban.
Ariel: A magical spirit who works in Prospero’s service and who helps to execute Prospero’s revenge plot.
Caliban: Prospero’s furious slave who believes that the island rightfully belongs to him and has been stolen by Prospero.
Ferdinand: Son and heir of Alonso who falls in love with Miranda upon first sight and happily submits to servitude to win Prospero’s approval.
Alonso: King of Naples and father of Ferdinand who aided Antonio in unseating Prospero as Duke of Milan.
Antonio: Prospero’s foolish and power-hungry brother who usurped Prospero’s dukedom.
Sebastian: Alonso’s aggressive and cowardly brother.
Gonzalo: An old, honest lord who helped Prospero and Miranda escape after Antonio usurped Prospero’s title.
Trinculo & Stephano: A jester and a drunken butler who provide comic relief as two minor members of the shipwrecked party.
