In Ancient Greece a xenia was a food gift for a guest and a painting of one was a representation of hospitality. The grape juice and sandwiches are typical of the food served to the homeless at Dorothy’s Place in Salinas, California. This painting was an homage to Robert Smith and the Franciscan Workers who served the poor at Dorothy’s Place.
