    Prologue

Far across the river, the sun was rising, shrouded in a shroud of flowing mist. It was not blindingly bright, like a blazing furnace in a forge. It seemed as if someone had dropped a spoonful of raspberry jam into the cream and stirred it slightly, and then knocked over the cup of sweetness, and it slowly spread over the green of the meadows, becoming thinner and more transparent. A moment more, and the haze of mist melted, the red berry splashing the

scarlet juice of the rays over the puffy clouds. The June sun is quickly climbing higher and higher, and now it is already giving warmth to the forest, the meadow, and the small village. It is warmth, not heat. Grace descends from heaven upon the emerald foliage of trees, upon threshing fields, upon forests, rivers and lakes. The earth smiles in its gentle rays, steam rises from it, and the air becomes humid, like in a bathhouse.

At the outskirts of the village, where a gray ribbon of dirt road divides the greenery of the gardens and the meadow into two halves, a noisy flock of children plays catch-up. They have only panties on, their heels black with grass and dust. The voices of frisky children sound like birds chirping. Their grandmothers are listening with tenderness, and each one catches her favorite voice in the polyphony.

Suddenly, from a clear sky to the ground, gleaming crystal drops fell. People say about the blind rain: The Princess is crying. And the drops are, in fact, warm and very much like big tears. Such rain, though sudden, is quiet. There is no wind preceding it, tearing leaves from the trees and laying rye to the ground, no heavy lead clouds and peals of thunder.

The children froze for a moment, and then, hooting and hooting, rushed under the shade of a sprawling linden tree, followed by the words from the nearby houses: No running in the puddles! Come home at once! Oh, I'll get you!

But the children do not hear. The noise of the rain drowns out the voices of caring grandmothers.

The rain really came down and turned into a real downpour. Only the tiny island beneath the lime tree remained dry, but the drops kept falling, kneading the dust into a greasy, warm slurry.

Princess calmed down as suddenly as she cried. The sun shone blindingly bright, as if after a wash, and only the streams reminded her of the rain. A minute or two, and they fell silent, leaving behind many large and small puddles. The air was filled with freshness, and the colors became more expressive and cleaner.

It was at this time that the water that had accumulated in the crown and that had finally overcome the thickness of the leaves spilled over the only dry islet. With a joyful squeal, the barefoot stinglets left their shelter and, slapping enthusiastically on the warm mud, poured out into the sun. In a flash, the malleable mud squeezed through their toes and spread in all directions, splashing dark gray glaze over the children rushing from head to toe in their homes. Grandmothers were already rushing towards them, carrying a mug of steamed milk, and a rainbow of colors hung over the village.

To wish much and do nothing is worse than to do something, wishing for little

Spring weather in this part of the Atlantic is not known for quiet, warm breezes, but for strong winds. But they were no threat to the chic yacht with the equally bright name of Ice Angel. The Golden Shell was steadily sailing her course. Even when a wave absorbed the force of the southerly wind, struck the hull of the vessel and, exploding with billions of splashes, crashed onto all three decks, it calmly continued on its way. The 500-ton displacement vessel was not afraid of salt waves and spray, and the multitude of thrusters and hydrofoils, controlled by the Heesen Shipyard's smart electronics, easily handled the ocean waves, compensating for any roughness.

Twelve people could comfortably sleep in six luxury cabins on the lower deck. On the upper deck, for relaxed sun and sea bathing, there was an exclusive Jacuzzi and a shaded bar. Here, above, a wind-protected glass partition housed a sumptuous dining table with twisted legs. This polished piece of carpentry resembled an octopus flattened against the glass of an aquarium. The chairs were made of Karelia birch with sharpened legs and carved backs. Dining at this table one could admire the circular panorama from the height of the seventh floor. The vessel and its passengers were attended by a well-trained crew of 12 people.

In the most beautiful cabin on the main deck, next to the bar and lounge, two lovers were seated for their first romantic voyage.

They were enjoying a cocktail of sea, scrappy winds, sunshine and love, and then they were on the upper deck, splashing in the Jacuzzi and exposing their naked bodies to the surprised sun, or giggling in the chic library, grabbing the first phrase they could find from a book they picked up at random. Young people cooed as they enjoyed the fine food and collectible drinks assembled at the bar, admiring each other as they sat at a game of chess. The attendants were invisible, but all it took was the thought of something and, as if by magic, the wish was granted.

Ricky woke Victoria at dawn with a kiss and said softly:

I'm sorry to disturb your sleep, but you have to see this. Get up. Come with me. He took her hand, led her to the porthole, and pulled back the curtain."

Victoria's eyes splashed out with genuine childlike delight.

Icebergs! she whispered, and suddenly, her joy was replaced by fear. She pressed herself against Ricky and trembled."

    What is it, my dear?

I am afraid. Are we going to die?

    What makes you think so?

The Titanic was so big, but the icebergs…

Oh, my God! I didn't think you'd be so frightened. Don't worry, darling, we won't share its fate. Luckily, our baby is navigating between those giant blocks of ice. Take a look for yourself.

Victoria turned to the porthole again. Behind the glass the white giants floated by, becoming more and more grandiose by the minute. The shiver in her body gradually subsided, and she began to look at them with interest, not even assuming that the icy mountains could be so mesmerizing. The sun peeked out from behind the horizon, and the blocks of ice glowed with gold. The giants were following one another in a line, and the grown-up young lady, like a little child, was greeting and seeing them off with delight.

How different they were! This one looks like a swan, and this one looks like an upturned bowl, and that one looks like an observation platform…

That, my dear, is why I woke you up. Are you all right?

Victoria shook her head, and he wrapped his arms around her back and put his arms around her firm breasts.

You're a miracle, and you're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!

These words made her feel warm and comfortable.

Can you imagine, Vicky, that what we saw was literally just the tip of the iceberg? An iceberg, just like a ship, can run aground, turn upside down. The greenish one over there, covered with algae, is an upside-down iceberg. By the time the block of ice has melted and turned into water, it will topple over many times.

I've seen an iceberg break away from the mainland ice, continued Ricky. It's a scary and at the same time mesmerizing sight. At that moment, the entire surface of the sea becomes very agitated. With a terrible roar, the broken off block crashes into the water, making gigantic waves, and they scatter, overturn small vessels nearby like nutshells."

Indeed, what I see is both frightening and impressive. And how do you know about the icebergs? Victoria loosened her arms around Ricky, turned to face him, and kissed him on the lips and looked into his eyes.

When my parents were alive, we sailed the Atlantic every year. I learned logging and boating techniques.

    You're an orphan?

    Yes, a long time ago.

    I'm sorry, there's still a lot I don't know about you.

My parents died over thirty years ago. I was at Oxford at the time… Ricky realized he'd said too much.

What about your twenty-eight years? Victoria asked, surprised.

Don't you know that twenty-eight comes after thirty? Ricky laughed, turning everything into a joke.

You are so cute and funny. Oh! Look at the fancy caves in this mountain! And here are huge ice crystals of amazing shapes, and they glow with a bluish-blue light from within… Fantastic!

My gentle angel, let's put something on and go out on deck. The miracles aren't over yet.

They held hands and stepped barefoot on the soft pile of the carpets and made their way to the upper deck. A chill burning breeze brought amazing sounds to their ears, as if flutists, trumpet players, clarinet players, and saxophonists were checking their instruments in preparation for a concert.

    What is that?

It's the sirens, said Ricky, lowering his voice and smiling slyly.

You must be joking! She disbelieved and scowled pretentiously.

Of course I am. It's the water that washes out the holes in the icebergs, and when the wind goes through the tunnels, they begin to sing.

I feel so good with you, but at the same time it's a little awkward…

    Why?

What will my boss do to me when I fail at my job?

    Fire me! Definitely fire me!

Victoria pouted her lips and stormed out:

I knew that after meeting you, I will spend the rest of my life in Moldova.

    And why in Moldova?

Who else would hire me after you fired me for slacking off?

    Yes, I will.

The girl could not find what to say, and there was a pause, during which Ricky, with a magician's gesture, took out of his robe pocket a small box, covered with black velvet, opened it and handed to his beloved. In the rays of the rising sun the diamond sparkled with a thousand sparks."

I give you my heart and ask for your hand.

She flushed her cheeks, and covered them with her hands as if to put out the fire within her. She even squeezed her eyes shut and stood still, afraid of frightening the Bluebird of happiness that had landed on her shoulder."

    Don't be stingy. Answer me.

Yes! I agree, answered the girl."

I, Sir Ricky Fleming, call to witness the grey ocean, the high sky, the bright sun, and the giants of the icebergs. Hear ye all! I love this woman and swear to be her devoted spouse for the rest of my life.

Vika threw herself on his neck, he took her in his arms, and they merged in a long kiss. He took her in his arms and brought her to the wind-proofed bar, seated her in a chair, and then, kneeling down in front of her, put a ring on the ring finger of his left hand. The diamond sparkled in the spotlight of the spotlights with all fifty-seven facets.

Ricky, darling – I'm over the moon, she whispered and, slipping out of the chair, sank to her knees. In the light of the morning sun she was as beautiful as a goddess. Mesmerized by the beauty of his chosen one, Fleming could not take his eyes off her. But just as he was about to kiss her she glanced past him, touched the safety glass with her hand, and cried out excitedly:

    Dolphins!

Ricky turned around and saw a group of these mysterious animals racing against the Ice Angel yacht. The dolphins glided on the surface of the water, jumped out of the water, and then plunged into the abyss.

These are the white-tailed dolphins, he explained, the most collective of the dolphins. They do not live as singles and gather in flocks of up to several thousand. And their speed is greater than the speed of our boat.

Oh! They are gone … said Vicky disappointedly.

Honey, they won the race and left for lunch. I think we have to eat something to eat too.

The two lovers hugged each other and made their way down to the cabin.

Ricky came out to breakfast wearing a striped turtleneck, a tight torso, short breeches, and canvas loafers. Vicky was just like him. A white satin dress in cornflowers, sky-colored ballet flats, and an Italian straw hat with a bouquet of delicate forget-me-nots made her look like a moth.

Three stewards and a somalier greeted the couple in the stateroom. A huge table was set for two, with two chairs at the ends facing each other. Ricky seated Victoria and then sat down himself.

Three silver buckets of Moet & Chandon champagne were cooled in three gilded silver buckets, set on coasters that resembled a swirling wave. A small sturgeon, guarded by representatives of the aquatic element, rested on a dish made to resemble large fish. The fish was flanked by two lobsters, followed by lobsters, crayfish and king prawns dressed like gypsies in red shirts. In no less fancy menageries, shoulder to shoulder, were appetizers of lightly salted fish. Thin slices of snow-white like polar winter flounder and halibut, golden dried sturgeon, amber sterlet, and salmon the color of the rising sun seemed to be jostling in line for scarcity. Behind them, as if afraid to go unnoticed in this abundance of seafood, a trout was reddening. The accent in the still life was the dark red pieces of pink salmon. In two silver vases, polished to a mirror shine, golden-speckled beluga caviar of the highest, royal brand Three Nil was piled high.

I suggest we start with it, intercepted Victoria's glance, suggested the owner of the yacht.

As he scooped the caviar with a gold spoon she noticed the massive bracelet with a scattering of white and black diamonds on his wrist, and a ring in the style of techno-art, obviously made by the best masters of their
