    Chapter 1

    HOW IT ALL BEGINS

This is the true-life story of a young boy born in December 1971. He was to grow up in one of Glasgow’s most deprived areas Blackhill. It was a small housing scheme in the East-end of the city. Blackhill was close to the old canal system (Now the M8 motorway), and the old Provan gas works. But this scheme was more famous for its Gangsters and Razor Gangs. in the late 1950s and 60s Blackhill became known for its fierce reputation and gang culture. And the Up-Rising of one of Scotland's most feared men, Glasgow’s Godfather Arthur Thompson. Blackhill was a run-down part of the city, and in the 1970s Blackhill started to get a facelift. New homes had to be built, and the old homes demolished. As well as the construction of the new M8 motorway. But with all this industry around, and renovation of the old housing scheme, armies of rats plagued the streets and the old buildings. At night-time when the lights went out, the rats would run around the streets, looking for food and new homes to invade. things got so bad; those rats were now getting inside some of the people's homes. Mothers & fathers had to work all day, and then stay guard all night. To fight off the rats that managed to invade their homes. Even though everyone’s houses were clean and tidy, (you could even eat your dinners off the floors), the rats would still seek comfort in the warmth of their new homes. But these mothers and fathers, with the help of friends and neighbours, fought the battle each night in their homes until the rats were killed. The proud people of Blackhill and Glasgow were known for their coming together and fighting till the end spirit. Blackhill had its reputation of being one of the most feared housing Schemes in the city. But to the people of Blackhill, it was just a place they called home. The scheme had all the usual characteristics that every town & city had. Some people made you laugh, other people made you fight, and then some families just did not get on. These families would be at war with each other, every day and night. (But no one that was not involved ever got hurt, this was an un-written Rule). And it was enforced by Glasgow’s Godfather. He kept the peace in all the housing estates of Glasgow and beyond, (NOT THE POLICE). Everyone knew never to cross the Godfather, the price of that was so severe, and even end of life. The people of Glasgow respected him more than the law. It was just a way of life in Glasgow. Most people in Housing estates like Blackhill were born into poverty-stricken families, where no-one in the household ever had a job. But this young boy was born into a working-class family. His father was a joiner and his mother worked in a sewing factory. Times were difficult for all families back in the 70s. Money was very tight, and families and neighbours all clubbed together, to make sure everyone had a roof over their heads, and a hot cooked meal. This young boy was born into an already made family, he had two older brothers and one older sister. They all lived in a small two-bedroom top floor flat, in Craigendmuir Street Blackhill. His mother and father worked hard, for a better way of life for their four children. but soon after she had given birth to this boy, she was now expecting another child. His mother and father knew this meant, there was going to be another mouth to feed. But his mother and father were strong and knew they had to just get on with their day-to-day life. The day came and a new baby brother was born into the family, this meant there had to be some changes in the family home. This included Sleeping arrangements, the children’s bedroom had to be adapted as the flat was so small, as all five children were in one bedroom. There was a double bed in this room, and the three older children slept in it. And as money was so tight these days, (families could not afford a cot) the two smaller children slept in old storage drawers. As the 3 older children had slept in before. This was just a normal way of life, in this working-class, poverty-stricken area of Glasgow. But events were to change everything in this family home. Things were going to get

much tougher. once again as his mother had to stop working, for a while to look after the two younger children. So, this puts huge pressure on the family. But once again in the old schemes families and neighbours all came together to help each other. No one starved or went without food or anything that they needed. The community was your family. Your neighbours all became your aunties and uncles, and everyone looked after each other.

    THE FIRE

Times were to get tougher even more, on a cold and dark November evening. A fire was to break out inside their family home. The fire was started in the children’s bedroom, the two older brothers had found a box of matches, that had been left on the living room table. They had lit a fire in the corner of the bedroom. The fire quickly took hold of the bedroom. And sent the older children into a blind panic. The older children started to shout and scream in the bedroom. But no one heard their cries. This made the older sister and two older brothers so afraid of what they had done. The older sister ran out of the bedroom shouting and screaming for her mother and father. This time her cries for help were heard. As she had woken up her parents, her parents ran to see what was going on. They found their daughter in the smoke-filled hallway crying. At this point, the parents both knew the house was on fire. So, they rushed to the children’s bedroom, to get the other children. In their rush and panic, they grabbed only the three older children and the Newborn baby. By this time, the flat was filled with smoke and flames. They thought they had all the children as they ran down the stairs, the stairwells were full of neighbours in a state of panic, all screaming for everyone to get out of the building. By now everyone in the building was aware of the fire in the top floor flat. You could not even see your hands in front of you, with all the smoke in the stairwells. It got so hard that you could not even see the stairs or the neighbour's faces. Every household was all running with their children. And with what belongings they could carry, out of the building; The flames and smoke filled the stairwells to all the flats. Panic, fear, and anxiety was on everyone's faces gathered outside, on the street of the burning building. The sky was lite-up with the flames. You could see the roof was ready to give way and fall into the burning buildings. Neighbours all started checking to see if everyone was un-injured, and every household was accounted for. This is when the family's biggest fears were realised, that a child was missing. The second youngest was still in the burning building. The father and neighbours all tried to get back inside the burning building. But could not get any further than the first floor as the smoke was too thick. As they all returned to ground level. The fire brigade arrived on site. The firefighters were met with total panic and cries for help. They were to find out that a child was still inside the burning building. He was in the top floor flat; he was still asleep in his make-shift cot, in the back bedroom of the flat. The firefighters then hurried to get all their equipment on, but they knew they had to act fast. As they started up the burning building’s stairwells. The fire crews battled and fought, the flames and smoke to get to the top floor flat. As they got to the top floor flat’s front door, they were met with a wall of flames, that engulfed the entrance to the burning flat. The fire crews fought their way into the burning hallway, they heard the cries of a child, coming from the back bedroom of the flat. The firefighters knew they had to get to this room quickly, but as they tried to get deeper into the flat. The roof became unsafe and started to fall into the flat, and this was making the rescue much more dangerous. All the falling roof beams and roof tiles were hampering the rescue of the child, that was still inside the burning flat. Fire crews were not going to give up, as more firefighters were arriving outside the building on fire, they started to assemble their huge ladders, against the walls of the building. Fire crews started scaling

the walls of the building on their ladders, to get to the top floor flat, from the outside of the building. Meanwhile, the firefighters that were still in the building, were still trying to get to the back bedroom, to save the child that was still in there. Suddenly one firefighter returned to the ground, and everyone cheered, as they thought that the boy had been rescued. But the firefighter had brought down the family's budgie in its cage (Ozzie). By this time, the crowds and the boy's

family were all shouting and screaming. And they all started trying to scale the building themselves to save the young boy. Police were now on site at the bottom of the building and ambulance crews arrived. The street was full of concerned neighbours. As they all were watching and waiting on the firefighters, trying to save the boy from the out-of-control fire, that had hold of the building and it was fighting back. More and more fire crews started arriving, and the family was now fearing the worst. Fire crews were all still scaling the outer walls of the building with their ladders. Everyone feared for the boy's life and was starting to give up hope for the child’s safety. But suddenly a loud shout, from the top of the burning building, caused a mass silence on the street below. The fire crews had got the child, and he was alive. Firefighters rushed the boy down the smoked filled stairwell. And rushed him to the waiting arms of the ambulance crew. By this time, the child was struggling to breathe. The ambulance staff rushed him to a nearby ambulance and started to administrate oxygen to help the child breathe. Once they got the stressed child stable, they hurried him by ambulance, to the awaiting doctors at the local hospital. Where the young boy was put on a ventilator, as he had to be treated for severe smoke damage to the lungs. The boy had to stay in hospital to recover from his massive ordeal. His family were now homeless and had nothing. But all the families and neighbours all worked together. Beds were made-up for all the families that could not return to their homes. Food and clean clothes were made available for everyone. The boy's mother stayed by his bedside at the hospital. And the father took refuge in neighbouring houses with the other four children. weeks passed as the boy recovered in hospital. The people who lived in the building that went on fire were all rehoused in the local area. This included the family of the young boy in hospital, this boy would grow up to be known as The Businessman. The burnt-out buildings in Craigendmuir street were a total loss, they needed a full Gut-out and new roofs. The young boy was about to be released from the hospital; This was a very anxious time for the family, as the boy would need a lot of extra care and support. And both parents had jobs, that they needed to keep. As they had lost everything, they had owned in the fire. They needed both their wages to support the family. But it was now time for the boy to go home, from the local hospital. But as they suspected, he would need a lot of care, as his breathing was still not 100%. The hospital doctors informed his parents, that his breathing would be affected for the rest of his life. Police and social workers were now involved, and questions were asked. About the mother and father's ability, to keep all the children. His mother and father took an exceedingly difficult decision, to let the second youngest stay with family members, as he needed more help with his breathing, as it was affected badly, by the smoke damage. This was a painful and heart-breaking decision for his parents. But it was the right thing for them to do. As money was so scarce, they knew life would get much harder for them. So, the boy was to go stay with other family members. This was for the best, and only in place till the boy got better, and the family got settled into their new home. His father returned to work and his mother had to go back to work too. As time passed the boy was still with other family members, and it suited everyone this way. Things were looking much better for everyone, and new beginnings were already on the horizon. The family got settled into their new home in Hogganfield

Street, (still in Blackhill) this was a much bigger home. All the family had their bedrooms and were all settled into their new house. Everything was starting to look good for the family. And the boy was ready to start school, life was getting back to normal for everyone. but the boy still needed inhalers to help him breathe. And needed to still attend out-patient department at local hospital, as his breathing would still take a long time to heal.
