Flight of the Sunbird
Myriam Blanc lay on a makeshift metal sled under the belly of a biplane. She pushed herself around with her booted feet, rolling casters over rivets and folds in the floor while she inspected the landing gear. She held a small flashlight in her teeth, pointed up inside the belly of the plane, and sorted through the stack of wrenches, sockets, and screwdrivers balanced in a stack on her belly by feel. Oil covered her fingers in despite wiping them on a rag and they slid around on the metal tools. Her fingernails hadn’t been clean in months. White skin stained faintly yellow with residue. There wasn’t quite enough room to lift her head off the sled to see what she was doing and when she rolled herself under the midline, she had to take care not to scrape her goggles right off her forehead.
She squinted up at a bolt, finally deciding on a three-eighths wrench to do the job. Something had seized in the mechanism on this plane’s last flight, and now the landing gear wouldn’t retract. She could still fly in a pinch, but it was Myriam’s job to get her working again.
Four punctures the size of baseballs just under one wing told the story. A massive set of claws from a paw the size of a car tore through the metal body like a spoon through cream. The belly panel had been replaced, along with the innards, probably, and some of those tears were hammered closed and riveted
