    There were at least twelve different balloons to choose from celebrating a birthday and Tara stood at the counter considering her choices while moms with and without their children jostled around her, negotiating with each other about exactly how many balloons were allowed at their parties. One lone father, about as lost in the mess as Tara, stood off the back with the wide-eyed look of someone overwhelmed.

    Tara debated between a single mylar balloon that said happy birthday or thirteen letter balloons that spelled it out. Should she go with a pair of numbers or no numbers? What colors should she pick?
