    Curtains drawn against the night, lamps lit against the dark, fire burning against the cold. They sat around the rich mahogany table, sceptical, nervous and excited. Outside, the wind shook the shutters, the timber of the old house moaned and the trees swayed drunkenly, branches whipping and breaking. The nearby river sounded like the sea, fast-flowing, angry and dangerous. 

    Ms Thackery, the man said, eyes huge behind his spectacles. You mention something about the silvering, can you elaborate? The amateur researcher asked, notepad at his elbow.

    The silvering whispers that come from the shadows, Ms Thackery began, gold crucifix glinting around her neck. They will come, it will all make sense. The man's younger colleague sighed and sipped his coffee.

    Mrs Thackery, I am sorry to press you but we've come a long way, and whilst we are amateurs we-

    Don't want your time wasted. Agnes Thackery finished for him.

    Yes. Steven Hickish gulped and then tried his most winning smile. Unfortunately for him the effect was lost because of the number of chocolate biscuits he had eaten.
