His mother fought to prevent him from becoming a commissioned officer, believing that such a life would be too harsh for him. But George was determined to acquire property and wealth, and a surveying career could lead to quick riches.

#4 When George Washington was sent to find a good location for an English fort in the Ohio Valley, he met up with the French, who claimed the land as their own. The House of Burgesses then decided to fund a Virginia Regiment to assist in building a fort.
