    Basic knowledge about Sphynx cats

Sphynx cats do not originate from Egypt, as the name suggests. There is also not one breed Sphynx, but a number of hairless cat breeds, which are called Sphynx. What these cats have in common is that they are very lovable creatures that bond closely with humans. The hairlessness of the breeds is criticized by many animal rights activists. Owners of a naked cat are often accused of encouraging torture breeding and are also often called animal abusers themselves. For this reason, the book informs you in detail about the origin of the breed and also provides you with further arguments to refute these prejudices. Of course, you will also learn everything about the attitude of this special and extraordinary cat breed.

First of all, you should know that there are different breeds of cats, which are called Sphynx cats. Also, not every naked cat is a Sphynx. These breeds belong to the hairless cat breeds:

    Canadian Sphynx

    Don Sphynx

    Kohona cats

    Peterbald Cats

    Short legged bambino cats

    Floppy ear Ukrainian Levkoy

    Elf cat

In the past, naked cats were born again and again from normal domestic cats. Corresponding reports exist since the antiquity. From the year 1902 exists an illustrated documentation about a naked cat, which lived in Mexico. As a rule, these naked cats were not further bred and not recognized as a breed. So if you find a naked cat, it does not have to be a recognized breed.

    Canadian Sphynx

    Figure 1: Canadian Sphynx

In 1966 in Ontario (Canada) a domestic cat got a hairless male kitten in the litter of normal haired kittens. Male Prun was crossed with the mother. This litter produced kittens with and without hair. The owner now crossed Prun with his hairless daughters and grandchildren. In 1975, a hairless female kitten, unrelated to the Toronto cats, was born in the USA. It was named Epidermis.

A year later, Epidermis' mother gave birth to another hairless female kitten. Both hairless cats were given to a breeder. Epidermis thus became the progenitor of a new line of hairless cats. In the late 1970s, hairless kittens were again born in Toronto, one male and two females. Whether these were related to Prun remained unclear. The male reached a ripe old age of 20 years. His two female siblings Pinki and Paloma were mated with Devon Rex cats in the Netherlands. These few animals are probably the origin of the breed Canadian Sphynx with the breed standard valid today.

The nudity is due to a mutation of the gene krt71 (keratin), which in another mutation leads to short-haired cats with wavy coats. This breed is known as Devon Rex. Since inheritance is recessive, both parents must carry the mutated gene. The mating of
