    General considerations for keeping cats

Contrary to what is often assumed, cats are not loners. Almost every cat wants to live in the company of other cats. So, if you intend to have an apartment-only cat, you should get two or more cats. Unless you are taking in an older cat that will not tolerate cat companionship.

    Do cats suit me?

A cat is a very self-willed creature. It does claim a lot of attention on the one hand, and we also do not like to subordinate. If you have the idea that you determine the life of the pet, you need to say goodbye either to this idea or to cat ownership.

You can largely impose your will on a dog. He learns to come to you on command and lies down on a place assigned to him. Living with a cat means that you negotiate a compromise with the animal. Your cat will accept boundaries, but will obey commands only when it pleases him.

Example: You want the animal to turn to you immediately when you have time. However, your cat decides for itself when it wants to cuddle, play or have your rest.

The fewest demands on the holder are usually small animals such as guinea pigs, hamsters or rabbits. These animals are satisfied if you keep the cage clean and occasionally play with you. However, only stuffed animals get along completely without attention. A cat is not satisfied if your care is limited to cleaning the litter box and feeding.

    Legal aspects of keeping cats

Landlords are not allowed to issue a general ban on keeping cats. Corresponding clauses in form leases are invalid. But a clause that keeping animals requires permission is allowed. Individual agreements when concluding a lease can also prohibit keeping a cat.

A landlord must, if you ask for permission and he wants to prohibit the keeping of a cat, justify his decision comprehensibly. It is therefore not sufficient if he personally rejects the keeping of animals. However, he can refuse permission if the size and number of animals is not in reasonable proportion to the size of the apartment. Even if the living environment is unsuitable, he has a reason to refuse to keep cats. This is the case, for example, if you want to keep a cat with free access on the top floor of a high-rise building.

You are of course liable for any damage to the apartment caused by your cat. As a tenant, you
