PREFACE
I have been a busy veterinarian for many years and have had the unique experience of meeting people from many backgrounds in my varied practice.
I have observed that pet owners would like to learn, know, feel confident, and understand more about pet care for the cats they love and engage with everyday.
It is my intent to create a book that simplifies technical medical information so that cat owners and readers become informed without being overwhelmed. I hope to eliminate the frustration some owners face and encourage owners and readers to continue their quest for knowledge. I am convinced informed owners make better owners and will make better decisions for their pets.
It is also my hope that every owner and reader not only enjoys the basic and easy to understand information in this book but that, after reading it, they can, with confidence, seek great care for their pets.
This book is written to provide owners with basic general information regarding cat needs and care.
This work is not intended to be a substitute for veterinary care. No one can learn the professional discipline of being a veterinarian from a book. You, as the reader, will quickly realize many disorders overlap in signs and symptoms and there is caution to not overlook serious illness as much as not to mistake simple, uncomplicated disorders for more serious illness.
Please seek veterinary care for your pet as needed. Some situations encountered with your beloved pets require immediate attention.
Enjoy this book! Terrie Sizemore DVM
INTRODUCTION
Both dogs and cats are close companions, however, every cat owner knows that to know and own a cat is to love a cat.
Every day in my chosen professions, I make technical medical information understandable to my clients and patients.
Cats have many roles in the lives of people, however most are close companions to families, individuals and children. They are company for their owners as well as make childhood a most memorable time.
I have always said, ‘the people who do not like cats, do not know cats.’ Each has its own distinct personality and adds so much to owners’ lives. Keeping them healthy and with their owners and families is what I do every day.
C is For Cat
provides basic knowledge for every cat owner. The subjects range from vaccines for major preventable diseases in cats to reasons for spaying and neutering, what to expect when our cats are expecting, arthritis, dental care, emergency care, performing a physical exam, geriatric concerns, nutritional care for cats emphasizing overweight management, poisonous substances to cats, and a very brief chapter on behavioral issues.
Chapter 1
CATS ARE
THE MOST POPULAR PET IN AMERICA
At the creation of this book, the total number of ‘households’ owning dogs outnumber the total number of ‘households’ owning cats, however, the total number of cats as pets outnumbers the total number of dogs. And…..
…no matter if you selected a special breed of kitten……
… like this beautiful Siamese…
… or a Burmese, Himalayan, Turkish Angora, Russian Blue….
Persian…..
Tonkinese, British Shorthair, Sphynx, American Bobtail, Ragdoll, Maine Coon……
Balinese, Havana Brown, Peter Bald, Manx, Ragamuffin……
Bengal…..
Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, Abyssinian, Somali, Turkish Van…..
Or any of the other numerous breeds of cats….
Or, decided to adopt from one of the many shelters around town….
Or, like me…you picked what is called a plain old alley cat……
It is important to remember that we remember…..
Veterinarians are also committed to the best care for your pet and are certain you want to understand care recommendations so you as cat owners can make great choices for your furred (and sometimes not furred) friends.
Chapter 2
Getting Started
When bringing our treasures home... some considerations are…...
