THE ADVENTURES OF SAM AND SOPHIE
Good morning,
said Sam in a sleepy voice.
Sophie, having been woken from a wonderful dream, stretched inside her nice cosy bed and replied, Good morning to you, Sam.
Then, with a big yawn, she asked, Did you sleep well?
Sam, who was giving a good scratch behind his right ear with his back leg, replied that he had also had a good sleep and a wonderful dream about chocolate drops and other goodies and that he was now ready to go outside to say hello to all the other animals in the garden.
Pester them, more like,
Sophie said. Before Sam could reply, she continued, Let’s go and wake John up to take us out.
Jumping out of her nice warm bed, she went into the room where Ann and John, their owners, slept; Sam followed behind.
John was huddled under the duvet fast asleep, so both dogs put their wet noses against his face knowing that this always worked. Sure enough, John woke up with a start.
Hello, you two,
he said before jumping out of bed. Sam and Sophie wagged their tails as fast as they could. He gave each of them a kiss on their forehead, which made them both even happier.
As soon as the back door was opened, both ran out barking happily. Like two little puppies, they chased each other around the garden bathed in the summer sunshine. It promised to be a beautiful day.
The birds were singing, and one song in particular made Sam look up into the sky. Kevin the Crow was sitting on a branch, and Sam, barking as loud as he could, immediately ran over to him; he enjoyed making Kevin jump.
Squawk!
cried Kevin, flying quickly out of the way and onto the safety of a branch in the next garden. I do wish you wouldn’t do that,
he said, looking down at Sam who was still jumping up and down and barking loudly.
Good morning,
barked Sam in a joyous mood.
Hello, Sam,
groaned Kevin, wishing Sam would go and play somewhere else so that he could carry on searching for the juicy fat worms he so enjoyed for breakfast.
I bet you have a lovely view from up there?
Sophie said from the other side of the fence.
Yes, it is. I can see for miles,
replied Kevin in a happier voice. He liked Sophie, as she was always nice and never chased or scared anyone like that silly Sam.
Sam, now tired of barking at Kevin, ran after John, who was calling them both so that he could take them for their morning walk through the fields.
After a short walk, they soon reached the fields. Kevin, who had followed them, spotted Robert and Rhiannon the Rabbits. They were having their breakfast and basking in the sun in the middle of the field. Kevin flew ahead to warn them to watch out as Sam was close by.
Both rabbits spotted Sam running towards them just as Kevin gave out a loud squawk of warning. Knowing what Sam was like, and having their tummies full of food, they did not want to be chased, so they quickly ran down a dark hole and hid.
No sooner had they reached safety than Sam stuck his head into the hole and shouted, Come on, you two! I fancy a good chase.
Go away, Sam, and chase somebody else for a change. It is too early to go running all over the place. Besides, we have only just finished our breakfast and were enjoying the sunshine until you came along,
Robert replied. He then followed Rhiannon deeper underground.
Spoilsports,
Sam muttered down the hole. No one wants to play this morning. What’s the matter with everyone?
Then, seeing the stream, he decided he needed a drink of water. As he bent over to have a drink, he spotted his reflection in the water and was just thinking how handsome he looked, when he heard noises coming from the other side of the stream.
Quack!
cried Dot the Duck. Please, somebody help me. Frank the Fox is trying to take my babies!
She was jumping up and down and waving her wings to try and scare Frank away. But he was moving slowly forward, ever closer to the nest and her two babies.
Croak!
said Trevor the Toad. We have got to do something to save us all from Frank.
With that he hopped into the water and disappeared.
Without another thought, Sam, barking as loudly as he could, jumped into the stream and started swimming to the other side.
Hey, watch where you are putting those paws, you great lump!
gurgled Tommy the Trout, who up until then had been enjoying a nice swim in the stream.
Sorry,
panted Sam. Love to stop and talk, but I haven’t got the time just now. Dot the Duck needs some help to stop Frank the Fox stealing her babies.
In that case, go get him,
Tommy replied, jumping out of the water to get a better look.
Yes, do,
croaked Trevor the Toad. We are right behind you,
he added bravely from the safety of the water.
Sophie and Kevin, having heard the noise, rushed up. Kevin flew ahead, squawking as loud as he could in an effort to distract Frank the Fox. Sophie jumped into the water and quickly joined Sam on the other side of the stream.
Frank the Fox had just reached the nest and was about to snatch the two baby ducks when he heard Kevin squawking and Sam and Sophie growling and barking. Whilst he ignored Kevin and would not normally be frightened by a dog, he knew that he would be no match for two dogs. So, with his tail between his legs, he ran away.
As he ran across the field, he was followed closely by Kevin and two of his friends, Malcolm the Magpie and Paul the Pigeon. They only gave up the chase when Frank reached the safety of the trees.
Having reached the trees, Frank hid under a large bush. From the safety of the bush, he watched Sam and Sophie reach the edge of the wood. There they stood, smelling the air in an effort to find out where he had gone.
Both the dogs and the birds stayed for a while to make sure that Frank didn’t try to sneak out of the trees somewhere else. When they were satisfied that he would not be coming out, they returned to the stream to see if everything was alright and that the two baby ducks were unharmed.
By the time Sam and Sophie reached the nest, every animal and bird within the area had gathered around. There was Robert and Rhiannon the Rabbits, Kevin the Crow with his friends, Malcolm the Magpie and Paul the Pigeon, Steve the Squirrel, and, of course, Dot the Duck and her two babies. Trevor the Toad, not being very brave, stayed in the water telling everyone that he was looking after his friend Tommy the Trout who could not leave the stream.
Oh, how can I ever thank you all for saving my little babies?
cried Dot the Duck before giving both Sam and Sophie a peck on the nose to show how pleased she was.
Don’t mention it. We were only doing our duty,
Sam replied in a deep voice.
Only doing your duty, were you? It looked like a good bit of bravery to me,
Paul the Pigeon said.
You weren’t so bad yourself,
Kevin the Crow told Paul.
Oh, I admit it wasn’t easy being brave. But one has to do one’s bit, you know. Anyway, Malcolm was with me, and it’s a good thing that Frank ran into the trees or else…
Seeing the looks on the others’ faces, Paul decided it was best not to say any more.
You are all such brave and wonderful friends!
Dot the Duck cried out, covering her babies with her wings.
Not wanting to prolong his embarrassment any further, Sam said, Well, bravery or not, I can hear John, our owner, calling us, so we must be off. Come on, Sophie, I will race you to the top of the hill.
Turning to the others he said, Bye, all.
Bye, everybody. Hope to see you all soon,
Sophie added before setting off in pursuit of Sam who was crossing the stream already.
As they watched the two dogs running across the field, the remainder of the animals and birds were glad they had saved the day, and when Sam and Sophie stopped to wave goodbye, they all let out a loud cheer which echoed across the valley.
Where have you two been?
John asked as they returned back to where he had been patiently waiting. Up to no good for sure. I hope you were not responsible for all that noise coming from the stream?
If only you knew,
they both muttered under their breath. We have been heroes and have saved the day.
Smiling at each other, they followed John with their heads held high; they looked forward to the bowl of milk that would be waiting for them back at the house.
As she drank her milk, Sophie said that she was pleased that there had been a happy ending and that she was glad they had both been able to help their friends.
Sam, on the other hand, had finished his milk and was lying on the kitchen floor. He congratulated himself on being a brave dog, and, as he fell asleep, he dreamt of heroic dogs saving the day for all the other animals and birds in the countryside.
SAM AND SOPHIE RESCUE AT THE LAKE
They could smell the water long before they arrived. As they came in through the
