THE LETTER
On July 5, 1942, a postal worker delivered a letter to a family in Holland. It was for 16-year-old Margot Frank. Inside was an order from Germany’s Nazi Party. Margot was to report to a labor camp in Germany. A similar letter was sent to thousands of other Jewish people.
The Nazis considered Jewish people responsible for all the problems their nation had experienced after World War I (1914–1918). They decided that getting rid of Jews was the solution to the nation’s poverty.
Margot’s parents, Otto and Edith, were afraid. If Margot didn’t report, the entire family, including 13-year-old Anne, could be arrested. Otto and Edith Frank believed the family had no other choice but to hide away the next morning.
