Finn McCool:
Irish Heroes
Introduction
The very core of Irish spirit and the character of this nation are based on the many wonderful myths, legends, and folk tales that are carried on through the centuries. Generation after generation, age after age, all those classic Irish myths are still alive - against all odds. From the murky pre-Christian times, through the early Middle Ages, and all the way until today: these folk tales and myths have always slipped through. Even through many wars, migrations, and disasters, the Irish folk have stubbornly clung to their oldest traditions and beliefs. In those dire times of need and hardship, all men and women will look to their traditional heroes for inspiration. One such folk hero is certainly Finn McCool - the brave and powerful leader of the Fíana , the roving bands of hunter-warriors. A poet, a seer, a skilled warrior and a charming man, Finn McCool is subject to many adventures and heroic deeds. It is his adventures and achievements that instilled inspiration in the souls of many Irish men and Irish women. In these tales, he leads his brave band of young roving hunter-warriors and is renowned as a poet and a seer. At his side are Bran and Sceólang, two powerful hounds. Finn also possesses great wisdom. It was said that he had a thumb that granted him great knowledge. So, what’s not to like about him? We can quickly understand how he could have easily inspired generations of Irish folk.
In the following pages we will attempt to retrace the steps of the legend of Finn McCool, looking back into the distant past in an attempt to piece the puzzle of his origins. Is there evidence of his pan-European origins? Is Finn an ancient Celtic deity, transformed into a fleshed-out hero? What are the parallels between him and other such heroes across the British Isles and Europe? There are many questions that we must answer in order to fully understand the nature of this unique Irish hero and his role in the cultural identity of the Irish people.
Chapter I
The first thing we need to touch upon is our hero’s name, Finn McCool. Finn McCool is known in many versions, depending on the regions, transcriptions, and place of origins. Of course, his original, native name is in its Gaelic form: Fionn mac Cumhaill, but that is not the only version you will encounter. In Old and Middle Irish versions, he was known as Find mac Cumail or Finn mac Umaill. He is known also as Finmacoll, Fin mac Coile, Fyn Mackoll in many other versions. The most common version of his name that you will encounter is the Anglicized version: Finn McCool or Finn MacCool. The sheer variety of the versions of his name should not be so surprising, after all, he is not a figure exclusive to the Irish myths. He also appears in Manx and Scottish folklore. Simply put, wherever the Gaelic language and Celtic culture spread, Finn McCool followed!
What secrets hide behind this name? To figure this out, we need to touch upon the etymology of the word. In
