Episode 1
DAMN, I DON’T FEEL like takin’ my ass to work tomorrow!
she said as she threw herself on the couch.
You better!
her cat, Twelve, replied. You know there’s only so much research money I can make to buy my own food!
he said as he made his way over to comfort her on the black couch, holding a cup of catnip tea.
Twelve was a tuxedo cat that used to be like any other cat until the lab experiment he was in a few years ago went sour. Over time, Twelve developed the body of a muscular man inside of his cat fur along with the ability to walk on two legs.
I want some sneakers like his!
Twelve told Quinita one day as he pointed out some Nikes on a man playing basketball, while they were out walking around at a park. My feet are more like your feet now, and they hurt!
he whined.
As a result, Quinita bought Twelve his first pair of shoes.
Quinita saved Twelve from being euthanized after discovering that she was the only one able to talk to or hear him after the experiment gone wrong.
I don’t feel good, and I’m kinda hungry!
Twelve had said, sitting sadly in his cage.
Are you talking to me?
asked Quinita.
Does it look like I'm tal—hey!
Twelve paused, Hey! You can hear me?!
he said, as he walked over to Quinita in his cage.
The scientists’ mouths all flew open as Quinita continued to talk to the cat.
She was just as shocked as everyone else.
Raise your left paw,
Quinita instructed Twelve.
He raised his left paw.
Good, now raise your right paw,
she said.
He did just so.
That is insane!
said one of the other Researchers.
At the time, Twelve was called Sammy, but after what had happened and other events that followed, Quinita renamed him Twelve and told him why.
Hey that’s dope! I like it!
he’d said to Quinita after she gave him his new name.
Awesome! And you can just call me Q,
she told Twelve.
Quinita could clearly hear Twelve speaking to her. Everyone else could only hear him make cat noises, but boy did he have a mouth on him! Along with Twelve, Q also received a hefty settlement of a few million dollars.
Tonight, Quinita was enjoying a bowl of kettle corn and a big bottle of pinot noir while sharing some chicken tenders with Twelve, her beloved mutant cat, as they watched cartoons on Nextflix.
Can you pass the honey mustard?
he asked her.
Sure!
said Q, passing Twelve the sauce to dip his chicken in.
You make the best chicken strips, I swear!
said Twelve as he smacked loudly on his food.
Thanks, friend!
They lived in a 3 bedroom apartment in southern Tampa, Florida.
Although Quinita was known for her eccentric sense of fashion, she kept her home bright and neutral. White curtains for all the rooms, and the bathroom was decorated in white floral prints with purple.
Quinita didn’t like clutter, and everything was always in the right place and squeaky clean.
Pine or lemon-scented on a good day.
I’m not going in tomorrow!
Q protested.
I really think you should go, Q,
said Twelve.
So you can have the chicken all to yourself?
It’s not just that but I—
Quinita’s phone rang, belting the melody of Time After Time, a song made popular by Cyndi Lauper in the 1980s.
"Oh GOD what is it NOOOW?" she said while observing the name on the screen through her oversized, bubblegum pink-framed glasses.
She answered the phone.
Hello?
she spoke.
Twelve intensely watching her face.
Qu-Qu-Quinita we need you to come in a—
a nervous voice seeped through the speaker.
You don't need me for a damn thing tonight!
Quinita cut the crap before it began, putting the phone on speaker. I barely EVER have time to myself! I already have to come in tomorrow. Whatever it is, I’m pretty sure it can wait another 14 hours.
Twelve froze.
There was a long pause on the other end.
Hello?
she spoke
