Ray’s Friend
By Kim Davis
The first time I met Casey Larson, I was twenty-four and I thought he was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. During the summer before my final year of graduate school, my grandfather died. He’d been ill for some time and had moved from my Aunt Margo’s house to a nursing home about eight months earlier. My mother and I traveled from Chicago to Louisville for the funeral service and my Uncle Ray and Casey picked us up from the airport. Ray introduced Casey to us as Case Larson, his friend.
I took one look at Case and knew he and Ray were more than just friends.
Case wasn’t a tall man. He probably stood only around five-seven or eight, but what he didn’t have in height he made up for in looks. He had dark hair, blue eyes, a slim figure, a great ass, and a nice smile. He was also friendly and exceedingly polite. He helped me and my mother put our bags in the trunk of Ray’s SUV and asked about our flight from Chicago.
Case volunteered to sit in the back seat with me so my mother could sit up front with Ray. Being so close to him made me nervous. Not only did he look good, he smelled good, too, clean like soap and shampoo. I would sneak glances at him as he sat beside me and wonder how in the hell he’d hooked up with Ray. Not that Ray was a bad-looking guy or anything. He was tall and buff with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was handsome, but Case was out of his league. I couldn’t figure out how my temperamental, loud-mouthed uncle had managed to snag a seemingly sweet, low-key man like Case.
I’d grown up being equally fascinated with and repulsed by my Uncle Ray. He was my own personal Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He was often funny and generous with me and my cousins when we were younger, taking us out for hamburgers and ice cream. But I’d also seen the other side of
