    Ray’s Friend

    By Kim Davis

The first time I met Casey Larson, I was twenty-four and I thought he was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. During the summer before my final year of graduate school, my grandfather died. He’d been ill for some time and had moved from my Aunt Margo’s house to a nursing home about eight months earlier. My mother and I traveled from Chicago to Louisville for the funeral service and my Uncle Ray and Casey picked us up from the airport. Ray introduced Casey to us as Case Larson, his friend. I’d grown up being equally fascinated with and repulsed by my Uncle Ray. He was my own personal Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He was often funny and generous with me and my cousins when we were younger, taking us out for hamburgers and ice cream. But I’d also seen the other side of
