August Cox started writing as a child and pursued creative writing while in high school. When August was twenty, she began writing The Wrong Samantha, then known as Wrong Victim, however, took a hiatus to pursue her BS and then her MS while also becoming a parent. During the pandemic, August created and wrote the Ramona the Cactus series, which inspired her to finish her debut novella. August has since finished the sequel to The Wrong Samantha, called It's Not Love; It's Betrayal. August is currently working on her MS in an MFT program. August was recently diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2 and has several tumors in her brain and spine. The tumors in her ears have taken her right side hearing and her left side balance. They cause her headaches, vertigo, body pain, and nose bleeds, and affect her day to day life. Treatment is available but will likely speed the process of August going completely deaf. If you have ordered something directly from August - this is the reason for the delay. August is open to any and all communication and provides her contact information on her copyright page.

Trigger Warning
This novel has many scenes that are meant for mature audiences only. There are scenes of violence, torture, rape, murder, and murder of an unborn child. There is a significant use of foul language. Discretion is advised.
Dedication
This novel is dedicated to Alysse Steve, who has provided countless hours of encouragement, many ideas, and was a sounding board for every twist and turn that I thought would be a good idea. She has become an amazing friend and confidant. Thank you so much for being there every step of the way.
Preface
Despair swallowed her soul as she plunged into darkness, the ringing in her ears becoming a crashing of waves, drowning her thoughts. The pain was overwhelming, until it simply wasn’t. She was free. After all this time, she was finally free.
Chapter 1 – Melanie (present)
Isit at a long brown table with someone they keep referring to as my counsel, a balding chubby man. He would look over at me with his dead eyes and talk, breathing his stale breath in my direction. I’m sitting with my arms on the seat of my wheelchair, where they feel as heavy as fifty-pound weights. My head is dangling, and I can only slightly bob it in each direction if I want to see who is talking. I start counting while everyone is asking questions; one two three, one two three, one two three. I can feel the attention turn toward me, but I can’t bring myself to look at the man asking the question. I don’t know why they keep asking me questions, so I try to tell them to stop but instead my voice comes out as a grunt. I can’t speak. Why can’t I speak? My breathing feels constricted, and my chest feels tight because I can’t speak, and I don’t know their answers. I feel a little drool start to go out of my mouth and become cold, but my arm is too heavy for me to lift in order to wipe it off. There’s some arguing and a man starts saying some name, Melanie.
I feel like I know that name. I don’t know how, but it gives me enough strength to lift my head. They’ve turned their attention back to me and they’re asking me something and calling me by a name I have never heard, Ms. Meyers. I keep looking at the man who called me Melanie. Who is this man? I feel like I know him but at the same time, I have no recollection of who he might be.
Another man stands up and stumbles. His hair is disheveled, and he looks like he hasn’t slept in days. I am almost certain he is the one who brought me here to the courthouse today. He slurs his words slightly but says I am his wife, and I had a stroke recently. I don’t remember having a stroke. I woke up and I was in a room, and they did my makeup. I don’t remember getting any medical care before coming here. I don’t remember a lot of anything before coming here. Do I even know who I am? What was my name again? The man announces to the room that I am pregnant. I don’t think I like this man, who calls me his wife, while swaying and slurring. Would I have willingly fucked him? I don’t remember. The room gasps, as one man is calling me someone else and another man claiming me. There’s a man who looks slightly familiar and is calling me his fiancé and saying my name is Melanie. The judge asks me again what my name is and I just grunt. I don’t know my name. I don’t know who I am or where I am. Everyone just keeps staring at me, so I grunt again, and again, and again, shaking my body, trying to say I don’t know. I look at the man who called me Melanie and a scene plays in my head.
"Happy birthday, Melanie. I hope you enjoy being thirty this year! the man says.
I love you and I will see you after you take your new shoes for a test run!"
I widen my eyes as much as I can. Is this a memory or is this my mind playing tricks on me? How am I supposed to know when I am not able to speak? I grunt again, but no one hears because the big doors in the back of the room fly open, ricocheting off the walls and bouncing back towards the person walking in. It’s that woman from earlier, I saw her before they started putting makeup on me. She called herself Samantha, but everyone else called me Samantha. Who is Samantha? WHO AM I?
I AM SAMANTHA MEYERS, YOUR HONOR,
she screams to the room. The man who called me Melanie is looking at her and then looking at me as the color drains from his face. It’s as if he’s seen a ghost. The woman starts stumbling forward, wobbling, and holding her very pregnant stomach. I could see a little blood running down her leg as she did so. I also noticed she had a big black and purple bruise on the side of her face. I wonder what happened to her. Another scene plays out in my head.
I am going to take every bit of your last will to live Samantha. You will regret the day you left me,
the man who claimed to be married to me said. He was in my face, so close I could see his skin was yellowing and his eyes were sunken into his face. His teeth were dirty, and his face was unshaven.
I loved you and you fucking left me!
he screams, spitting every word at me, right before an extreme amount of pain hit me, electrifying all the nerves in my body.
I take a deep breath and attempt to focus back on the room, feeling dizzy and disoriented. It was like I was there; the pain was so real I could still feel it crawling on my skin. The woman points to the man who is supposed to be my husband and says, That man has kept this woman captive and has tortured her repeatedly so she would hit the stress threshold to cause stroke-like effects and not be fit to stand trial today. All this because she looks like me and he couldn’t find me. This is what The Organization does. This is what I have been trying to tell you!
She stumbles and my husband makes a jerking motion as if he wants to go steady her.
I am the key witness today against The Organization who has hired Robert Jenkins to incapacitate witnesses to crimes to make them unfit to stand trial. I had been under cover watching and documenting all that I had witnessed until he,
she points at the other man sitting with my husband, terminated me. I have proof he was also working with The Organization, providing witnesses to be captured while I was working there!
The gallery begins talking and it is so collectively loud, it covers the sound I am trying to make. The judge yells I will have order in this court!
and bangs his gavel several times. Everyone quiets down including me. I don’t want to be in more trouble, and I don’t know who any of these people are or what they are going to do to me. Now I remember feeling pain, extreme pain, I don’t want to feel again. I start to silently cry, tears pouring from my eyes, streaking my face, and making little splats on the desk in front of me.
I am terrified I am going to be in trouble for making the slightest of noise and my body begins trembling. The judge says, I will be sending this Jane Doe to a hospital in the area for an evaluation to be able to determine who she is. Ms. Meyers, do you have any proof of identification or this evidence that you speak of with you currently?
he asks Samantha.
Your honor, I had to rush over here because of what they did to this poor woman; therefore, I was unable to bring my files with me. I would ask for a continuance of this hearing,
Samantha explains, leaning against the bench she’s near to. The judge ponders for a moment.
With this newfound information, Mr. Jenkins, and Mr. Spalding, you will be held in jail until there is a determination made on Ms. Doe’s behalf. We will reconvene in thirty days so Ms. Meyers can present her evidence in court.
Oh my god, I just came from a hospital, didn’t I? I saw what it looked like in there, I don’t want to go back there.
I begin grunting and sobbing as much as my body will allow, snot pouring out of my nose and dripping over my lips. My tears are hot and burning my eyes, but I am not able to wipe them. Everyone in the room I can see, looks at me while I am struggling to get any part of my body to move. Finally, I jerk and fall forward out of my chair.
MELANIE!
the man from the scene calls and rushes toward me. He picks me up and wipes my eyes and my nose with a tissue. The man pulls the hair off the sticky part of my face and tucks it behind my ears. Suddenly, I am looking at him, but not from right now.
Hey Melanie, would you mind being mine forever?
Of course not,
a woman laughs, going from looking at him to laying on her back and looking at the ceiling. And we can have plenty of babies and you’ll pay the bills while I stay home, right?
She laughs but he doesn’t. She turns to look at him and he has tears in his eyes.
Melanie,
he sits up and pulls something out of his pocket. Would you do the honor of becoming my wife?
He slides the ring on her finger right before she throws her arms around his neck, knocking him down off the bed, all while screaming YES YES YES!
I look down and see I am wearing the same ring on my finger the woman was wearing. That’s strange, I don’t think I had a ring on earlier today. It’s a gorgeous princess cut diamond with a pink shimmery hue, refracting light wherever the light touches it. The gold band wraps beautifully around the diamond, holding it in the perfect position to catch as much light as possible. I continue to look at the ring while the man is talking. The gold band shimmers on my skin. He sounds like mumbling background noise,
