About this ebook

Do demons really exist? Have you ever seen one? Are people who claimed to be possessed merely having a non-specified emotionally induced psychotic episode? Is it possible that those who alleged to have expelled demons experiencing some type of religious self-induced hallucination? That is what the main character in this novel once believed.

The story of Satan’s Godson is based upon the hypothetical notion that as Jesus had John the Baptist as his forerunner, the Antichrist may also have a forerunner who will sow seeds of deceit, subtle enough to deceive even the most devout Christian to accept his false identity. A demon born in the dark corners of antiquity searches for a way to emerge through an astrophysical world into the world of mankind and pave the way for his master. An innocent little boy becomes swept up into a whirling demonic mystical plot planned and perpetrated by one of Satan’s most dreadful demons. Dr. Otis Boyd is the boy’s father. He is a man with strong convictions and is an avowed gnostic who neither believes in the traditional Christian definition of God, nor in demons. However, he soon finds he must face a personal inner demon he thought was buried deep in depths of his past and turn to a God who he has never acknowledged to help him save his son, his sanity, and his soul.

T here are people in our lives who are so unique and special that we cannot imagine being without them. Even though I cannot mention all of them by name, I can note a few who played a significant role in the completion of this project. For instance, Elder Victor Burgin, an intellectually gifted, member of the Church of God in Christ who stirred my consciousness to finish and publish this novel. My friend Freddy Ratliff of Phoenix, of Arizona, alerted me to the need to expand the characters’ background. My mentor and friend, Dr. Marie O’Banner Jackson, a scholar par excellence, patiently offered a listening ear when I needed one and scrutinized every sentence of every paragraph of every page. Her confidence in my ability was uplifting. Dr. Mary Hall, a charming, spiritually devout sister, persistently told me to let God order my steps regarding the possible benefit this religious/fictional story may have for those who read it. Floyd Williams, Jr., a friend, and fraternity brother whom I have known for what seems like a lifetime, pushed me to see this project through to the end. I must also mention the contribution of Dr. Jerry Ward, noted author, poet, and academician, who first extensively reviewed draft of this document in 1988 when I initially penned it, giving me an insight into the wording and progressive development of the story. Also, I must recognize Tamkea Bright, Claudia Jones, and Angela Griffin, though not my sisters by blood, most definitely my sisters by love, who reminded me that giving up is never an option. Stanley McCluney, an entrepreneur, more like a brother than ever a cousin, was always there for moral and spiritual support. Darryl Boyd, an invaluable friend to whom I owe an endless debt of thanks. Antonio Baker of New Orleans, who was once a student, but became like a son, a little brother and a friend, excitedly asked questions about the story that led to refinement of the characters. And JaMaury Norris, of Michigan who I met when I was an Interim Dean of Students, with whom an unbreakable bond of sonship and Frat-ship was established that endures to this day, was adamant that I publish this manuscript. The same can be said of Ovie Godfrey of Chicago, who talked with me the first day after class and we have continue to talk ever since, sharing his unique perspective of God and religion.

Finally, I humbly extend my gratitude to my younger brothers, Jerell and Randy for their love, moral support, and being the best brothers in the whole world. There are others, members of my family and friends whose names I did not mention. I say to them, know too that you are appreciated and adored beyond measure.

And there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was there place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world... and his angels were cast out with him (Revelations 12: 7- 9). And I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven (Luke 10:18).

    Prologue

I was taught that since the beginning of recorded history, man has attempted to understand the meaning of his existence and how and why he came into being. Universally, mankind concluded, aside from the Big Bang Theory, that we are who we are because a God or gods created us, the earth, and the cosmos. Thus, we named these gods and extended to them the powers that control human behavior and human destiny in this life, and in some cases in a life beyond death. The presence of these gods affects everything from the rising and setting of the sun, the moon and stars in the night sky, weather, triumph and tragedy, and all aspects of our existence. These beliefs became religions. Some of the dominant religions are Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Shintoism. Each has followers who believe in their god’s divinity. Each has prescribed propagators, priest, ministers, shamans, or prophets who delineate, outline, and define how their worshipers should behave, the appropriate ways to acknowledge and reverence their gods and actions which will earn them reward or punishment. One religion that evolved out of antiquity called Judaism.

Before I go further, I must note that some point God decides to choose a nation for himself that would singularly obey and worship him and through whom he would eventually use to introduce a unique monotheism to the world. Of all the people nations populating the earth at that time, He chose Abraham, from which the Jewish nation would come into being. The accounts of the Old Testament relate stories of how they were blessed and punished numerous times for rejecting, repenting, and disobeying him again. Time after time they were taken into captivity. Why make these people of all people his chosen? God eventually allowed the Jewish nation to be torn apart. Nevertheless, it would be through a virgin female Jew that the savior of the world would come. It was prophesied and has come to pass that Israel; the homeland of the Jews would be restored. They follow the words of holy book, the Tanakh. The three books that comprise the Tanakh are the Torah, Nevi’im and the Ketuvim and reject the New Testament of the Bible and Jesus as the Messiah. While Christian worshipers accept the Bible as a complete authenticated document, both Old and New Testaments. It is from the nation of Israel that Christians learn that God is called Jehovah. He is also referred to as Elohim, El Shaddai, Yahweh, Elohai and I Am That I Am.

In the Bible, prophets of old foretold of a day when mankind would be delivered from the curse of sin and reunited with God by an anointed redeemer, a savior who would be sacrificed upon the alter of iniquity and sin for the salvation of the world. Isaiah said this redeemer would, grow up as a tender plant and as a root out of dry ground and that he would be smitten and bruised and slaughtered for the chastisement of our peace, and both physically and spiritually we are healed by his stripes. It would take forty-two generations before the birth of the prophesied Christ. He is reputed to have been born through an immaculate conception in Bethlehem, south of the city of Jerusalem and named, Jesus. His cousin, John the Baptist, according to the Bible, was the forerunner of this Jesus, announcing him as the Lamb of God, who came to take away the sins of the world. It was John the Baptist’s commission to prepare the way for Jesus and present him as the true Messiah.

It is noted in the biblical text that before Satan makes a defiant return into the realm of men, he will concomitantly be preceded by an Antichrist who will spread evil throughout the world and create a fertile foundation for Satan’s wicked plans of world domination and the overthrow of the kingdom of heaven. The Antichrist is then the forerunner of Satan, as John the Baptist was for Jesus. But who or what will precede this so-called Antichrist? Scripturally, there is nothing to suggest that anything or anyone will. However, how else will the Antichrist be so successful in preparing the way for Satan’s return if he does not have a forerunner - a herald, someone who will seduce the minds of the holiest and devout men and women into believing that he indeed is the Christ? Isn’t that the reason it is recorded in Mark 13:20 but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days, before a larger number of followers of Jesus are duped into believing a false Christ is Jesus Christ? Is it unreasonable to conceive that that the Antichrist will have a forerunner to achieve this feat?

Some preachers postulate that the Antichrist is a single entity, an individual whose coming trumpets the advent of Satan’s return. Others argue that the term Antichrist by definition means being against Christ and therefore is anyone who says Jesus Christ is not the Messiah. Accordingly, such persons have been on earth proselytizing for millennia, persuading men and women not to see God as God, or converting them into nonreligious agnostics who believe it is impossible to know if God exists. And I vehemently agree. And if that were so, we are now living in the age of the Antichrist. The forerunner of the Antichrist has already arrived, poisoned men’s minds, visited humans in demonic or other forms and done their devious deeds, and await Satan himself to act.

I do not consider myself to be a zealous believer in biblical angels and demons and other dark mysterious creatures of the night. I cannot bring myself to accept traditional religions, and I am skeptical about aspects of the Bible in its current form for several reasons. There are too many unanswered questions that disconnect the Bible from certain facts, as I see them. For instance, how do intellectually gifted scholars explain the discovery of fossilized dinosaur bones and the Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man? If such creatures never existed, where did their remains come from? Genesis says, In the beginning, God created heaven and earth But who created those things. And for that matter, who created God? He was in the beginning, but who or what established a beginning, to begin with? And God-Jehovah said that what he created was good. He was pleased with what he had created, and he did so for his pleasure, and no other reason, as far as we can understand.

Moses is credited with having written the first five books of the Bible. Though the Bible notes, And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds, he was not a scribe. Since he was not there when God is said to have formed man from the dust of the Earth, how did he come to know the intimate details of the discourse between Adam and Eve and the events in Genesis? Forgive the sarcasm in my tone when I note that Moses supposedly received all the information in those books through divine revelation. What a convenient explanation. That revelation had to be given to him before he received the Ten Commandments. When did he have time to write such a detailed exposé with complicated words, chapter by chapter and verse by verse contained in those books?

What of the stars, moon, planets, and galaxies that existed far beyond Earth? In the scripture, this one Almighty God is said to have created them too, but appears to be overly preoccupied with mankind, a creature he formed from nothingness. Is the all-knowing, all-powerful God, with the ability to be present simultaneously throughout the whole of existence, so narrow-minded in his focus and so imaginatively impotent, that he could not populate other planets with viable sustainable life such as those that exist on Earth? Throughout all the galaxies he created, is Earth the only planet he saw fit to cultivate with intelligent life? Why would he be so limited in his creative scope? In the book of Psalms David acknowledges and asks, When I consider the heavens, the moon, the stars which thou hast ordained, what is man that thou art mindful of him? Surely God did not put those lights in the night sky to only become a part of a child’s nursery rhyme of Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.

There are worlds beyond worlds up there in that sky. What is their purpose? Are they purely for our wonderment and amazement? Will America’s or any country’s space programs ever really construct a craft capable of traveling multiple light years from Earth, land on a planet, and colonize it? When was the last time we even sent a man to the moon? My grandfather died at the age of 104 believing that no one has ever been to the moon – that it was all just one big hoax.

Is it blasphemous, audacious, and profane to ask, how did God become God? My grandmother said it was. But I must ask nonetheless, where did He come from? It is said that He exists outside the parameters of time and space. Again, this is a convenient explanation to dismiss any further inquiry. The scripture says God refers to himself as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and ending. Therefore, he always was, and always will be, according to him. He is the-always-present, all-seeing, all-wise, all-knowing God. So surely then, he must have foreseen the day Lucifer, a.k.a. Satan, would start a civil war in heaven and attempt to overthrow him. According to Ezekiel 28:12, Satan is reputed to have been the most beautiful, most powerful, highest ranking angel in heaven, and had the seal of perfection, and was full of wisdom. Not only that, but in the 15th verse it is concluded Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. God elevated him to be the angel of angels. Satan even directed the heavenly choir, or so I am told. Can we rightly assume that God created angels to praise and serve him, and He also gave them emotions and free will? It must have been so. God created the angels to worship him in heaven and earth, but Satan became so overwhelmed with pride, envy, jealousy, avarice, and anger that God reigned over all the universes and cosmos, that he sought to usurp God and rule in his place. And he persuaded a third of heaven’s most powerful angels to fight alongside him to achieve his dastardly goal, according to the bible. So, Satan called a meeting with his conspirators, a huge group of prominent angles, and persuaded them into joining him in the conquest of heaven. He convinced them to use the superpowers God granted them in a fight against God. Were they also crazy?! He made them. Did they seriously think they could defeat him? Evil enveloped these angels the moment they revolted against God, instantly transforming them from exquisitely beautiful beings of spectral light into contorted, grotesque, deformed, dreadful, creatures that we fear and now call demons. Some of the more powerful angles can briefly appear in different beastly and even human forms. Why didn’t God simply destroy Satan – kill him before he committed this treasonous crime, since He is omniscient? Why did God merely banish Satan to the earthly realm after the war against him, where he would later continually cause chaos, carnage, heartache, sufferings and pain? Kill him! Isn’t that what we do to traitors? At least we imprison anarchist or people who propose replacing the current government with one of their design Now, Satan is the central reason that man must die. Some feel that he was cast out of God’s presence like a bolt of lightning hit him the moment he sinned and now only has temporary access to the Lord. We know from Job 1:6 that Christians believe he does. He dwells in an earthly and heavenly sphere that encompasses a special spiritual continuum relative to the earth, yet not in heaven. This is a fiery dimension some preachers and believers call Hell. It is not somewhere underground as pictures and movies would have you believe. What did John Milton say of Satan Better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven? Some biblical scholars construe that a day will come when Satan will no longer be given the privilege of speaking or appearing before the Almighty. He will be imprisoned until he is loosed for the final battle of Armageddon. Revelations 10:10 says, ...for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God both day and night. Christians believe that Satan runs to God and accuses the sainted believers of all manner of sins, making them hypocrites, worthy of God’s wrath rather than his mercy. Consider these words from the 20th chapter of Revelations: And I saw an angel coming out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, that old serpent, called Satan and bound him for a thousand years, and cast him into the abyss... After this he must be loosed for a little while. It is also believed that demons are in reality the fallen angels who fought for Satan. They abide in the same place as Satan having different degrees of power and authority, as within any army. For an example, the pastor of my mother’s church noted a scriptural text found in Daniel 10:13 that states But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but lo, Michael, {an Archangel} one of the chief princes came to help me. This clearly shows the degree of the power they possess. And it includes the power of demons capable of possessing humans and animals. Satan also has limited power over the atmosphere. It is written in Ephesians 2:2, ...according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. This is unfathomable to me. Why allow Satan to keep his power after he tried to usurp God’s thrown. My mother and grandmother wanted me to accept a religion, a belief in a God who seem to almost always act after the fact. They sing He may not come when you want Him but he’s always on time. He’s an on-time God. Yes he is. And they justified God’s seemingly late arrival to be deliver from pain and suffering with the words of 1 Peter in fifth chapter and tenth verse, noting, But may the God of all grace, who called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen and settle you.

It is written in Psalms that, God’s mercy is everlasting, and His truth endureth to all generations. Does it? He could have spared humans the suffering of death and damnation if He had simply killed Satan when he expressed his intent to reign as god over God and heaven. Again, I ask, why didn’t He? Did He let Satan live so He could be entertained in a global game of Demon versus God, with the souls of human beings serving as the ultimate appetizing prize? It is illogical! It does not make sense! And it is unfair! By sparing Satan’s life did not God also usher in the entity called evil. Is not Satan, according to the Bible, evil incarnate? If God did not create evil, then from whose bowels did it spring forth? Where was his mercy when the bubonic plague ravaged Europe, killing a third of its population? Is his mercy sleeping when multiple thousands die yearly in Africa of starvation and disease? Where was that mercy when hundreds of thousands of Black African men and women and children were torn from their ancestral homes, brought to America as slaves, beaten and lynched, and shot dead, and raped, and skinned alive. Their offspring’s have yet to be afforded all the rights they were promised. And what about the Jewish children who were thrown alive into blazing hot furnaces as the Allied Forces of WW2 seized concentration camps, and the millions of adult Jews who were slaughtered like sheep at the command of Hitler, a narcissistic sociopath who almost won that war? Where was his mercy then? Did not the agonizing screams of those poor horrified innocent babies ascend into his ears? If so, why did he do nothing to stop it?

Where was He during so many atrocities heaped upon the blameless, weak, and vulnerable by devious, malevolent, moronic psychopathic men? I was told since I was a child that Everything happens for some reason. Tell that to the parents of a beautiful twelve-year-old girl who was abducted from her bed in the middle of the night, raped, sodomized, her throat slit, and her innocent tiny body thrown into a gully on the side of a road. What was God’s reason for letting her last moments on earth be filled with excruciating pain and unimaginable terror? Somebody please tell me. Tell my half-sister. It was her child and my niece. No preacher at her funeral had a rational answer. No life in prison without parole sentence on the perpetrator can bring her back. No words can fill the hole her murder has left in our hearts and our lives.

Why did this loving, merciful God require the sacrifice of his son through crucifixion; a brutal, barbaric, bloody, excruciating, agonizing death, for him to forgive mankind’s sin of having committed acts that violated His laws of prescribed appropriate behavior? Was there absolutely no other way, nothing else that could have appeased this sainted God of mercy to purchase the forgiveness of mankind’s wrongdoing, other than the murder of an innocent man... his only begotten son who took off his godly form and wrapped himself in sinful human flesh? Are we compelled to feel sorry for God because he made such a sacrifice? Now, according to the Bible, everyone is born in sin. David said in Psalms 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Therefore, everybody, every innocent baby born, starting with Adam and Eve’s first child, is born a sinner because the first humans,
