#1 I had flown to Madrid to meet with Spain’s top anti-corruption prosecutor, José Grinda. I’d come to share evidence about how dirty money was used to purchase luxury properties along Spain’s Costa del Sol.
#2 I was arrested in Madrid by Spanish police on an Interpol arrest warrant issued by the Russians. I was taken to the police station, and the managers there tried to seize my belongings.
#3 I was sure that the police officers wouldn’t be able to verify my tweet, so I took a picture of them through the Plexiglas partition. I tweeted the image immediately.
#4 I was arrested, and the officers took me to an unmarked building. They said I had to go into the building and have a medical exam, but I refused. The one next to me said flatly, No lawyer.

Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I had flown to Madrid to meet with Spain’s top anti-corruption prosecutor, José Grinda. I’d come to share evidence about how dirty money was used to purchase luxury properties along Spain’s Costa del Sol.
#2
I was arrested in Madrid by Spanish police on an Interpol arrest warrant issued by the Russians. I was taken to the police station, and the managers there tried to seize my belongings.
#3
I was sure that the police officers wouldn’t be able to verify my tweet, so I took a picture of them through the Plexiglas partition. I tweeted the image immediately.
#4
I was arrested, and the officers took me to an unmarked building. They said I had to go into the building and have a medical exam, but I refused. The one next to me said flatly, No lawyer.
#5
I was in the Spanish criminal justice system after being arrested on a Russian arrest warrant. I’d been bracing for a situation like this for years. I was charged with fraud, which was all boilerplate except for a little space for whatever alleged crimes I’d committed.
#6
I was released from the police station after the Interpol warrant was invalidated. I had 178 missed calls and a message from the British foreign secretary asking me to call as soon as possible. I was met in the lobby of the prosecutor's office by Prosecutor Grinda, who apologized profusely.
#7
I met with the prosecutor, who took my story seriously. I explained how, in 2008, my Russian lawyer had been taken hostage by corrupt Russian officials and ultimately killed in jail as my proxy.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
I was approached by three teenagers who were much bigger than me. One of them pointed at the flute case in my left hand and said, Hey kid, what’s in the case. I gripped my flute with both hands. Nothing. They laughed. I tried to twist away, but it was no use. They stole my flute case and ran off.
#2
I became obsessed with law enforcement after the flute incident, and would spend hours everyday looking at police reports. One day, I tried to steal a glance at the policemen’s papers, and was caught.
#3
I was so excited about the police officers that I started collecting their rap sheets. I was so enthusiastic that one of the officers asked if I wanted to join something called the Chicago Junior Police
