    CHAPTER ONE

    Butternut Street

    Once upon a time, in a small town called Gremlin’s Notch, there was a quiet street called Butternut Street. It was told that the name Gremlin’s Notch came from a notch in the mountains that surrounded the town. So, the story went. Many, many years ago, gremlins had carved a notch in the mountains, so they could scurry over them to their hiding places. Whether or not that was true, the notch was still there, even if the gremlins weren’t, and you could see it from Butternut Street.

    Butternut Street was named after Butternut trees, which grew on the hillsides near the edge of town. They were smaller than many trees are but lived sometimes to seventy-five years of age, which is about as old as some grandpas and grandmas! They produced small white walnuts which people would sometimes eat, and they were called butternuts.

    Well, anyway, Butternut Street was a quiet street about ten blocks off the main highway that ran through the town.

    At Number Twenty-Four Butternut Street lived the Wilson family, Father Wilbur Wilson, Mother Winnie Wilson, and their two children, Jim and Jane Wilson.

    Oh, and there were also two kitties because there are almost always two kitties in stories like this. The kitties’ names were Tucker and Wiggles.
