The Three Little Show Pigs - Pamela Kay Ratliff
CHAPTER 1
SAYING GOODBYE
Tears rolled down Becky’s face as the red pickup truck and little trailer pulled away from the old wooden barn. Becky looked over to Hattie and Budro, the other two young pigs inside the trailer with her, and thought, We’ve never left the old wooden barn before. What am I going to do without my Mama?
Becky was thankful that her friends were with her as she watched the rickety old barn get smaller and smaller in the distance. Becky knew that everything was changing forever.
Come on, honey!
Hattie encouraged. Budro and I will be your new family. Cheer up and look at this as a new and exciting adventure!
Sure Becky!
Budro exclaimed. There are pigs everywhere that would love to live the life of a show pig. Who wouldn’t want to be treated like royalty?
Even with Hattie and Budro trying to cheer her up, Becky believed her heart would surely break. She was scared and already homesick. Becky feared that without her mother by her side she would never be happy again.
Becky remembered how proud her mother had been when she, Hattie, and Budro were chosen to be show pigs. It means that you are very special and can do great things,
Mama had said. You’re going to be famous someday!
But Becky did not want to be famous; she just wanted to stay with her mother in the old wooden barn.
They traveled for several hours before Becky felt the pickup truck and trailer slow down. As Becky peered out the open slats on one side of the little trailer, Hattie and Budro began to squeal in excitement from the other side. Becky looked up to see the most magnificent entranceway imaginable. As the gate slowly opened, Becky thought that the tall stone columns and twisted iron gate must have been built by giants. Hattie and Budro were so anxious that they could not stop squealing as the truck and trailer wound its way up the tree-lined drive.
When the truck came to a stop a short time later, even Becky began to feel a little excited. The gate on the trailer opened and Becky could not believe her eyes. It was the most beautiful bright red barn she had ever seen. Becky noticed that the enormous sliding front doors of the barn were open and was amazed at how many stalls were inside. I bet a hundred little pigs like us could live in a barn that size!
Becky said with amazement. Hattie and Budro happily grunted in agreement.
With a lump still in her throat, a small smile spread across Becky’s face as she slowly stepped down the trailer ramp behind Hattie and Budro. Becky noticed a little girl with blond pigtails running toward them and she heard a young boy’s voice say, Sadie, don’t scare them! It’s going to take them a little time to get used to their surroundings and feel safe.
Becky saw the gentle-sounding boy walk from the front of the truck to where she, Hattie, and Budro were standing.
"I know Cooper, but I just couldn’t wait for you to get
