    Aliens!

    H ey, Clara?

    Yeah, Harold?

    Do you think she’ll bring us some biscuits?

    You know I don’t like biscuits, Harold, Clara replied. They’re such a dog thing!

    Clara flicked her bushy tail. And why are they always shaped like bones? Don’t they make mice or fish shapes? You know, something a cat would like.

    Harold and Clara were best friends. Well, the best of friends a dog and cat could be. The two had grown up together with their owner, Alice, and her parents. Although the house they shared was small, it was home. Harold, for reasons better left unexplained, appreciated the large yard, dotted with a variety of bushes and shrubs. Clara, being more interested in climbing and chasing birds, was fond of the grippy, red roof, which matched the older, white house perfectly.

    Life was good. Alice, who was ten years old, was a wonderful and considerate owner. She brought them biscuits quite regularly. Always bone-shaped, though …

    Alice absolutely adored animals. Her bedroom looked more like a zoo than anything a little girl would sleep in. Currently, it was home to a large elderly tortoise named Dorothy, two feisty ferret brothers, Simon and Garfunkel, a praying mantis known as Mr. Meatballs, Gloria the goldfish, and four rhinoceros beetles, John, Paul, George, and Richard. The little girl took great care of all her pets, but Harold and Clara held a special place in her heart.

    What do you want to do today, Harold? Clara was perched on the windowsill, watching brightly colored birds flit by. I was thinking about going downstairs and climbing around on the kitchen counters. Might be some food left out.

    Harold thought back to the one and only time he tried that … His long droopy
