#1 I was the black sheep of the community, and I had been warned many times by the Mistress of Novices that I could not race down the staircase like that, taking two and three steps at a time.

#2 I was sent to Aigen, Austria, to teach Baron von Trapp’s daughter. I was to leave the world and give up everything, but I did it wholeheartedly.

#3 I was bowing farewell to the other three candidates, when I took in with one last glance the picture of the large, oblong room with the six windows, the white-curtained cells along the wall, and the huge, old-fashioned Kachelofen, the European tile stove.

#4 I was on the road that led down the hill on which Saint Erentrudis had built her castle of God in the eighth century. I was still higher than the steeples of the churches. I looked over the quaint old Grabendächer.

    #4

I was on the road that led down the hill on which Saint Erentrudis had built her castle of God in the eighth century. I was still higher than the steeples of the churches. I looked over the quaint old Grabendächer.

I got off the bus in Aigen, and was immediately shrouded in a smoke screen. I could barely see the house across the way, which was the Villa Trapp. I was torn by conflicting emotions: sadness at leaving the sanctuary, curiosity about the captain’s home, and awe of him.

    #6

I was greeted at the Villa Trapp by the butler, Hans, who took me to meet the children. The Captain had given them each a different whistle so they could be called by name.

    #7

I was told that I was free for the evening to do my unpacking and get settled. The toothbrush and the few pieces of underwear, the brown velvet dress, and the dozen books were quickly disposed of. The satchel and the little hat wandered into the darkest corner of the huge wardrobe.

    #9

When you are a child of the mountains, you belong to them. They become your faithful guardians. If you cannot dwell on their lofty heights all your life, at least you want to look at them.

    #10

I lived in a state of bewilderment for the next few days. I had to get used to the different people, the house, and the
