Natasha Smith leaned over the woman next to her to get a bird’s eye view of Narita, the Tokyo Airport that serviced most international flights in her excitement. Finally! I’m here! she said to no one in particular. The woman frowned, but Natasha didn’t care if it was the pope himself glaring at her.

She’d been planning this trip for so long and couldn’t wait to start her vacation. Natasha was dying to learn more about Japan’s culture and take in all the tourist attractions. She wanted to soak up all of the beauty this country had to offer, shop around and find just the right things to bring back to the classroom along with every last detail of this trip. Once Natasha was back home and had the time to process everything. She’d develop lesson plans that Natasha hoped would instill the desire to travel and see the world in her fourth-grade students. What better education could one possibly get?

Her heart skipped a beat as the wheels touched down, and the flaps roared in response to the wind rushing past. The pilot hit the brakes and took a sharp turn, tossing passengers into their neighbors to the left even with their seat belts on. The woman next to Natasha glared at her again as if she’d meant to cozy up to her shoulder. Finally, the plane slowed even further to approach the gate at Terminal 1. Only a few minutes more, and I’ll be standing in Japan!

Natasha pulled out the map that she’d drawn of the airport’s interior with a red line to show her where to go after she finished with customs and immigration. Natasha added square boxes to the map.
