About this ebook

#1 In 1941, the British were facing a difficult situation. The Germans had conquered most of Europe, and their navy had been destroyed in the Battle of the Atlantic. The British were also taking a severe beating at home from German bombers.

#2 On May 21, a British agent in Sweden sent a coded message to the Admiralty in London about two German warships that he had seen heading north through the strait between Sweden and Denmark. The report was quickly transmitted to Sir John Tovey, the commander in chief of the Home Fleet.

#3 The British were able to track the movements of the German battleship Bismarck, which was located in Grimstad Fiord just south of Bergen. The weather grew worse and worse, and the British could not find the German ships.

#4 The British had used the Denmark Strait before, and it was the closest passage to the German bases. But it had one disadvantage. The ice pack extended from Greenland toward Iceland, and it was narrow.
