#1 The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is the body in charge of promoting and safeguarding the doctrine on faith and morals throughout the Catholic world. It is one of nine Vatican congregations, and it generates plenty of rulings of its own.
#2 The Congregation has a long history with the Inquisition, which was the Church’s effort to deal with its perceived enemies, within and without, by whatever means necessary.
#3 The Vatican’s holdings are so great that they need to store some of them elsewhere. The Inquisition records are kept mainly in the palazzo’s western wing, and for four and a half centuries, they were closed to outsiders.
#4 The Archivio di Stato is a repository of the lives disrupted and sometimes summarily put to an end by the Catholic Church. It is a record of actions taken in the name of religion, though the implications go beyond religion.

#4
The Archivio di Stato is a repository of the lives disrupted and sometimes summarily put to an end by the Catholic Church. It is a record of actions taken in the name of religion, though the implications go beyond religion.
#5
The Inquisition is also a popular metaphor for the tough legal measures taken against suspected terrorists since September 11, 2001.
#6
The Inquisition was a Catholic organization that was launched to combat the Church’s enemies, the Cathars of southern France. It lasted for more than seven hundred years, and its influence still exists today.
#7
The Spanish Inquisition, which began in the late fifteenth century, was directed at Jews who had converted to Christianity and were suspected of secretly reverting to Judaism. It also focused on the many Christianized Muslims who might be reverting to their original faith.
#8
The Roman Inquisition was the third and final branch of the Inquisition, and it was focused on Protestantism. It did not spare Jews, homosexuals, people accused of practicing witchcraft, and certain kinds of quirky or annoying freethinkers.
#9
The Inquisition is not what it was, but it is still alive and well in popular culture. It has taken on lives of its own, and can be found in the institutions of the secular world.
