–¡Yujuuu!
La frente de Alessandro Tarabotti se arrugó bajo su sombrero de copa gris. ¿Había sido eso algún peculiar canto de pájaro?
–¡Yujuuu, Sandy! –No, era una voz saludándole a gritos ¡a él! a través de la muchedumbre que atestaba el bazar.
Al señor Tarabotti le sorprendió tanto que se dirigieran a él de esa forma, en aquel lugar y con aquel tono de voz, que aflojó la presión. El lugar era Luxor. La voz era del tipo que hace sangrar el oído interno, una oda nasal que pregonaba a los cuatro vientos una escolarización generosa pero con escasa atención a los detalles propios de ella. Esta distracción momentánea permitió al flacucho muchacho nativo de aterrados ojos saltones zafarse de él y escabullirse por un callejón oportunamente cercano, desapareciendo tras una pila de cerámica rota.
–¡Bien, ya la hemos fastidiado! –gruñó Alessandro arrojando el trozo de tela que se le había quedado en la mano al mugriento suelo de la calle. Miró hacia el callejón, con los ojos adaptándose lentamente a la escasa luz que se filtraba a través de las esteras de caña extendidas muy por encima. Casas altas y calles estrechas… ¿quién habría pensado en Egipto como un lugar de sombras y penumbra?
–¡Sandy, viejo amigo! –La voz se estaba acercando.
–¿Quién le conoce aquí, señor? –preguntó Floote.
–La cuestión es más bien ¿quién se atrevería a gritarme yujuuu a mí? –El señor Tarabotti le dio la espalda al callejón vacío para mirar a su mayordomo como si aquel saludo fuera de alguna manera culpa de Floote.
