    The day at the beach had been what the doctor had ordered—literally—and, despite his assignment, Bob Kirk was genuinely enjoying himself despite his assignment.

    The mid-afternoon California sun bore down on the FBI agent and the other denizens of San Diego. It was warm, but never hot down on the coast. The odor of coconut sunscreen, sweat, saltwater, and hot sand filled the air. Up on the ridge, near Pacific Coast Highway 1, vendors sold hot dogs, popcorn, and roasted peanuts. Bob inhaled deeply, savoring the scents and thinking to himself just how much he enjoyed living in Southern California. It was a far cry from his boyhood in Denton, Texas, a small town just north of Dallas, and, in another life, these scents reminded him of the Texas State Fair. His
