The Sea Island Series
There is a special place in the world called the Atlantic Ocean. Along this ocean’s coast, on the eastern part of the United States, from South Carolina down to Florida, is a chain of tidal and barrier islands called the Sea Islands. The Sea Islands gift the inhabitants of these coastal towns with a glorious watercolor rendition of nature’s most dynamic array of colors, as well as a continual symphony. Each island has a different flavor, but they all have been given a special sprinkling of enchantment.
It is that enchantment that brings visitors from around the globe seeking beauty and tranquility. But within every village there are the locals. The locals have families, jobs, homes. And the locals have secrets.
Footprints in the Tide
It’s always this way. We’re on the fast ferry, heading back to Nassau. Rupert and Naomi corral their brood, which technically only consists of Sasha and Tyler, but a brood nonetheless, albeit a small one. I keep a close eye on Avery, who has stumbled over to a bench and drops her head in her hands. The thick engine fumes, combined with the constant lurching, the crowd, and the sun always make her queasy. As it does me.
I’d given Avery the last Dramamine I had an hour ago. Perhaps her lethargy is just drowsiness. Perhaps mine is worry. I certainly have good reason with the possibility of my secret being exposed, my past trying to find me.
Naomi smiles at me over the head of her three-year-old, Tyler, who clutches her knees. They’re all whooped.
I nod my agreement and try to focus on the present. This is my life — the sea, the sand, these people, scraping nickels, and slicing mold off the crusts of bread. It is certainly not glamorous, and for the hardship you would assume I’d never have it threatened. It’s not as if I’m profiting. There’s no unfairness in it. Is there?
A perfect day, coming to an end. We won’t do this again for at least another six months. The money, the time, too many things to keep us from it. But Sasha turning fifteen was a day of celebration, a day for Harbour Island. And Avery always looks forward to the
