    An Unwelcomed Visitor

A summer of discontent had fallen on Rosy Lane. The three months of aggravation had the entire community upset. A young lawyer, Ben Bluemont, and Rose had become acquainted in her last year of college. He worked for the firm that managed Rose’s mother’s estate. A whirlwind romance had left Rose bitter. Ben had been charming; he had been curious and had plans to take her family’s land and turn it into an upscale hotel. Rose’s mother was not amused. Ben thought about profit. He could see the potential and was flabbergasted by how the family was unconcerned about the family fortune.

Ben told Rose and her mother, Don’t you see? This can’t continue, Rose; you are naive. People take advantage of you. These people should pay rent and you should charge visitors when they visit. You are making a big mistake. It was not Ben’s fault; he did not grow up on Rosy Lane.

He could not figure it out, but more importantly, he did not want to understand.

Ben wanted to be a hero, and he did think that he was looking out for the woman he loved. As a lawyer, he could not fathom how the family could trust just anybody. His concern about the lack of documents or contracts and the liability of such arrangements kept him up at night. Ben was bewildered that grown women would hold on to a tradition and let a myth about some man who had blessed the land dictate the way they ran the estate. It was illogical. The more Ben had pushed these issues, the more the women resisted, and one night, Ben told Rose he could not in good conscience live this way. Rose showed him the door and wept.

Ten years to the day of Ben’s departure, Rose could hear Betsy at the door. No, you go on now.

But Ben continued, I heard about the house, the damage, and the insurance, and I can help.

Rose sat still. Betsy shook her head. No. Rose, she got it under control. She’s got a new beau named Jim, and you need to get on out of here. Ben held up his hands and walked back slowly. He meant no harm. He just thought he could help. Rose held her breath for a moment and then exhaled.

Jim came to the door of her office and said, What’s all the ruckus? Ain’t accustomed to this on Rosy Lane. He raised his eyebrows and gave Rose a questioning look.

Rose began, It’s a long story. She recounted the entire relationship. Jim whistled; there was a lot to comprehend. Jim understood Ben’s concerns. He, too, wondered about the legalities and the lack of contracts, but Jim was wise enough to keep these thoughts to himself. Jim smiled; he looked at Rose and said, If it ain’t broke—don’t fix it. Jim was a practical man. If the estate had run without incident for over one hundred years, maybe the luck would continue. If it did not, that would be okay, too. Jim looked at Rose, lifted her chin, kissed her lips, and said, There is nothing we cannot handle together. You are in good shape.

There was another knock. This time, Jim answered the door. You must be Ben; come on in and sit a spell. The two men looked at each other intently, sizing each other up. Rose wanted to vanish.
