Family Legend
In 1637 Europe was pregnant with possibilities, but David Boogman was concerned. As a Dutch merchant, he had grown rich on trade through the Dutch East India Company, but his fortune had blossomed with the tulip. There is speculation and rumor about how the family managed to survive the Tulip crash of 1637. No one knows for sure, but the family legend suggests that David had been at The Menniste Bruyloft. Dutch tulip merchants called bloemisten met to do business in this well-known tavern. He had overheard rumblings of shady, backroom deals and intuitively knew that he should shelter his wealth. Others believe that he was just lucky. Whatever the case, in 1655, the family left Holland and moved to New Amsterdam, the southern tip of Manhattan Island, in the New World. Roos and David Boogman purchased two hundred acres of land in Delaware for $25.00 in 1889; in 2019, the property was worth over $1,000,000. David named the property Rosy Lane because of the many roses that grew wild along the dirt road.
David was a horticulturist and grew the family wealth by importing tulips from Holland. A family business, a family fortune cultivated by flowers. His wife’s name was Roos, which translated from Dutch into English meant rose. David and Roos celebrated their good fortune by naming their six children after flowers and plants, all of whom grew and added so much to the life they had enjoyed.
Daisy was their first child; she was headstrong, willful, and independent. Lily represented rebirth, and Violet symbolized good luck. Their first son was named Guilford, referring to where the marigolds grew. He was followed by Hadley, which meant heather-covered meadow, invoking an evergreen shrub that covers the land. And finally Brandon, referring to broom on the hill and a gentle nod to the Robert Luis Stevenson poem,
In Romance, the poet mentioned a beautiful yellow weed called broom.
I will make you brooches and toys for
your delight
Of bird-song at morning and star-
shine at night.
I will make a palace fit for you
and me,
Of green days in forests and blue days
at sea.
I will make my kitchen, and you shall
keep your room,
Where white flows the river and bright
blows the broom,
And you shall wash your linen and
keep your body white
In rainfall at morning and dewfall at
night.
And this shall be for music when no
one else is near,
The fine song for singing, the rare song
to hear!
That only I remember, that only you
admire,
Of the broad road that stretches and
the roadside fire.
The family enterprise had been around for centuries. In the late sixteenth century, tulips were introduced to Europe. The family filled their pockets with coins because everyone was wild about Tulips. Tulips became an expensive and favorite flower with bright colors and wine glass shape.
The Boogman Family
The Boogman family was thrifty in life and wise in business. David ensured that the property would be entrusted to his six children. He also made provisions that the family could not sell the land unless there was a 100 percent agreement in the family. And, getting more than one independent, headstrong person to agree to anything was impossible. The land remained intact.
Roos Boogman was a no-nonsense woman; she liked things done well. She was organized and understood early on that she would need some help with a family with
