About this ebook

#1 I have done some of my deepest thinking on that bench, and though it’s a common bench, I’ve had some uncommon moments on that bench. I was trying to keep an old white lady from freaking out as I crossed the street.
#2 I was not laughing at the woman, but at myself. I was trying to figure out why she was so afraid of me, and I realized that it was because she didn’t know me.
#3 I want to remind you that there are a lot of people who won’t give me or people like me the benefit of the doubt. And I don’t have the privilege to guess who those people will be.

#1
Las Vegas is a city that was built around water. It was a key stopover for settlers heading west in the 1800s, and it became a pivotal place for trains and railways going to Los Angeles.
#2
Las Vegas has always been a city that welcomes people from all backgrounds. Because of this, I grew up in a diverse community, which is how I met my seven closest friends.

I had many crushes in school, but the one that affected me the most was on a girl named Jennifer Smith. I was in love with her, and I planned our life together. As I was thinking about what we’d name our twins, Brian Garrett walked up and said hello to me.
#4
I spent the summer of 1984 with my grandparents in Eutaw, Alabama. I remember the dirt and the black people. It was a small town with only black people.
#5
The town of Eutaw, Alabama, was once a thriving cotton-farming town. It was home to some of the most beautiful and lavish plantation houses in the South, built off the backs of enslaved African Americans.
#6
In Eutaw, Alabama, a black person is considered dangerous, so the black community stays together.
