#1 I grew up in a neighborhood called the Braes of Bloomfield, which was created by commuters hoping to get away from the faded glory of the Motor City. As a kid, I spent a lot of time exploring the woods between these upper-middle-class homes.
#2 Don and I were often mistaken as twins, although I still wonder why. We competed for everything with each other, and I think that contributed to an altercation in our front yard years later.
#3 My oldest brother, Mike, was a child of the Cold War. He spent hours creating elaborate codes and sending them to himself. When not saving the world from evil invaders, he was making stuff.
#4 Mike’s use of extensive lists came in handy when it came time to establish the rules of our childhood. Mike drafted and strictly adhered to a set of rules that addressed issues important to all of us.

Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I grew up in a neighborhood called the Braes of Bloomfield, which was created by commuters hoping to get away from the faded glory of the Motor City. As a kid, I spent a lot of time exploring the woods between these upper-middle-class homes.
#2
Don and I were often mistaken as twins, although I still wonder why. We competed for everything with each other, and I think that contributed to an altercation in our front yard years later.
#3
My oldest brother, Mike, was a child of the Cold War. He spent hours creating elaborate codes and sending them to himself. When not saving the world from evil invaders, he was making stuff.
#4
Mike’s use of extensive lists came in handy when it came time to establish the rules of our childhood. Mike drafted and strictly adhered to a set of rules that addressed issues important to all of us.
#5
The brothers had many encounters with their mother regarding their raids on each other’s rooms. They would often hide things in secret nooks and crannies, and would occasionally flush a stolen item down the toilet to protect it.
#6
The three of them built a tank that could attack things or people, and they even equipped it with a tunnel. The experience only fueled other summer projects, like the golf course.
#7
The Campbell/Ebbing Miniature Golf Course was next door to the Tylers, and we made money there. But I lost interest in the venture when Don caught me in the bridge of my nose with a wicked backswing.
#8
Don and I used to build UFOs and send them up in the sky. We would launch them towards Mrs. Pastor's house, because she had falsely accused Don and me of many infractions. We thought it was only fair to launch a bottle rocket towards her house.
#9
Don and I would rip up any FOR SALE signs in the vicinity and toss them into a stream. It worked for a while, but we couldn’t stop the real estate ads in the paper. One day, the lot next to our house was sold.
#10
My neighborhood was still pretty feral, with dogs roaming free and little to no houses being built. I would go trick-or-treating as a girl two years in a row, until I cut between houses and was felt up by a man with poor eyesight.
#11
I had a lot of fun as a teenager, and I was always willing to try new things. I would sneak up to girls’ windows and look at them naked, but I never got any action.
#12
I had a difficult time trying to impress the Brady twins, especially Karen, a redhead who was quiet, polite, and a 9+ by any standard. I didn’t care which one I dazzled first.
#13
The fad of making yourself faint caught on at
