About this ebook

She loved to play the damsel in distress. Though it did leave me wondering why she asked for me to come upstairs with her, if she didn't need my help carrying anything. Couldn't I just once play the chivalrous gentleman.

Chapter 1: Jock-Friend

It had been sometime since I had seen Robert in person. Sure, he was one of those friends you share a funny meme with on Facebook on occasion, or wish Merry Christmas. Yet it had been nearly 6 years since we finished high school, and I think I bumped into him once in the intervening years at the old neighbourhood pub. So, it was odd to receive his message suggesting we meetup for drinks.

Don't get me wrong. It wasn't bad, just odd. We weren't exactly friends in high school. Not in the generic sense of hanging out together, or sharing things. Robert and I were total opposites. While I was the short and skinny nerd who couldn't get a date, Robert was tall, athletic, popular, and had no problem with the ladies. I envied him.

And yet, I had never forgotten that Robert never picked on me. Lord knows, I suffered so much abuse from the other jocks. I was routinely taunted, sissy, faggot, panty boy. And I almost started to accept it when they called me Diane, instead of Dan. But thankfully, Robert never joined in the taunting, and frequently gave me a reprieve with a simple, OK guys, that's enough, or give him a break. And just like that, my torment was over. The alpha dog had spoken.

Apparently, we were now living in the same city again. I have been here since finishing college. Robert just arrived a few months ago. It's not like we were far from our home. Home was only a little over an hour's drive away. Yet the larger city, and separation from friends and family, provided a certain anonymity.

Therefore, when he invited me out for drinks, I figured what the hell. A chance to reminisce, swap some jokes, have a few beers, and then likely never see one another again for a few years.

I wasn't familiar with this bar, but it seemed to be a typical Thursday evening crowd. Some folks unwinding after work, some congregating around the large TV showing a basketball game, and a table of ladies enjoying a girls' night out. Robert was there before me, sitting on the periphery of the basketball fans. He rose up when he saw me, and shook my hand. He was surprisingly gentle for such a big guy with strong hands.

Hi Dian, a slight pause as he wondered if I caught his name mishap. It's good to see you. You're looking good.

I did catch the mishap. He was about to call me Diane. I hadn't been called that since high school, and never by him. Even though it brought up painful memories of being called a sissy, I decided to forget it.

Yeah, it's nice to see you. It's been a while.

Man, did I forget how big he was? He had clearly been body building as his tall physique was now chiseled with muscles. It made me nervous to stand in front of him. He easily had an extra foot and 100 lbs. of muscle over me.

I sat down at the booth, and Robert returned to his seat.

I didn't know what you liked, so I hope this is OK? Robert gestured to the wine cooler in front of me. It was a sharp contrast to the pint of dark ale in his hand.

It's fine.

I wasn't much of a drinker, so why make a fuss?

We started off with some small talk. Have you seen any of the old gang from high school? What are you doing these days?

I didn't have much to contribute. For me, there was no 'old gang'. There was a reason I moved away at the first opportunity. And work? Well, unless you're a computer nerd like me, programming on contract with SQL, Python, etc., wasn't terribly interesting.

Robert was managing this region for a large distribution company. Meeting with corporate clients, assigning schedules, managing a team of agents. It was impressive for a still relatively young man.

As for the old gang, he surprisingly had little contact with them as well. They lacked adventure and were not open-minded.

I didn't quite know what he meant by that. I just thought they were jerks.

The real lump in my throat came when he asked, Are you seeing anyone?

No, not really. I played it cool. I didn't want to dwell on the fact that the ladies never saw me in that way. Maybe
