    The Awakening. Book 1

    Chapter 1

Keana was a country girl at heart. With her secondary schooling completed, she has to move from the quaint little town of Meadow Crest to the slightly larger city Sentra to further her studies. She will be leaving her godparents, aunt Rose and uncle Jacob, behind. The couple were not able to have kids of their own. The topic was never discussed but her aunt and uncle swathed her with love and affection. Keana's parents died in an aeroplane crash when she was just 3 years old. The townsfolk threw her a farewell party with a feast fit for a queen. Well wishes in her future endeavours were showered on her with only one condition, that she not forget all who awaited her return. A tentative tap on her shoulder makes her turn around to the blues eyes of her best friend, Astra. The two girls were as night and day in appearance and nature. Where Keana was naive, Astra was cynical, where Keana was spontaneous, Astra was methodical. Keana was a free spirit, Astra preferred her feet planted safely on the ground.

I was just about to send out a search party for you, Astra, beamed Keana. Astra rolled her eyes in mock derision. You look stunning Astra. I love that dress. The midnight blue really makes your eyes pop especially with your black hair, commented Keana. The two girls had been inseparable since that chance meeting on their first day in school. Astra studied the face of her friend for a brief moment and took her hands in hers.

Keana...promise me one thing, whispered Astra.

Keana was puzzled by the sudden change in her friend’s demeanour. Astra's grip tightened on Keana's hands.

Astra... what's the matter? Are you OK?

I just have a really, really bad feeling about this trip. Like your life will never be same again explained Astra.

Don’t worry. I will be just fine and I can come home some weekends. This is my home and all of you my family Keana said while reassuringly patting her best friend's hand.

Arrangements were made by her uncle for her accommodation with a long-standing friend.
