As we travel down this road we call life, there are those who will remain in our memories forever. Blessedly, my old memories of those who have played a part in my life have been mostly good ones. These people have one way or another helped direct me down paths I may have never gone. My sixth grade teacher, Ms. Gibbs and her ability to make Greek history come alive peaked my interest in history, making me want to know more about the past. My high school geography teacher whose passion for Montana made me want to live there. Then there’s my long ago statistics professor, Mr. Slucher whom I wish I’d had for every math class I’d ever taken. It took someone like him to make math come alive for me.
Even with all of these educational influences, we acquire traveling down our life’s path, these pale in comparison to those who have made a forever impression on us when thinking about the human side of life. This is the important side of life, and for me, this is where Tony played a major part in my life. If I happened to be a betting type of person, I would say he has touched many along their life’s path in the same positive manner.
Over and above his many talents, he has this amazing positive outlook on life. He and has the ability to take something as negative as rotten eggs and makes it bounce back as lavender. However, even above the positive beat he has on life, the thing I’ve always enjoyed and often think of most is first my working experience with Tony.
The course we taught had a reputation for being the course from hell. Through no fault of the student, but all too often, most students who were sent to us did not have the required background for the course. Naturally, this set up a negative environment for the student before class even started. It’s what happened during our first encounter in teaching a class together, which to this day, still makes me smile.
The usual procedure was to start class with personal introductions. The tension in the class was thick, and Tony was up first. He spoke of some of his life’s experiences and qualifications for various security functions necessary for the field we were in, he then introduces me. It was how the introduction was made that relaxed the class and I had the good sense to go along with it.
Keep in mind, we didn’t know each other, so when he told a story of my ‘honeymoon experience’, it forever changed the tone of the course. Supposedly, this is what happened.
The Grand Canyon was the setting for the honeymoon. Understanding the safest way to traverse the canyon down the trail to the bottom would be with the rental of sure-footed trail donkeys. On the way down the canyon, Jay’s donkey stumbles. Although close to the trail cliff edge, she dismounts, takes the donkey’s head firmly in her hands, smacks him on his nose and firmly speaks to the donkey, Strike one.
Remounted and a third of the way down, the donkey stumbles again. This time, she dismounts and slaps the donkey on the side of the head, and says, Strike two.
Continuing down the trail, and about halfway down, her donkey stumbles again. Once again, she dismounts, but this time, she leans against the canyon cliff wall and with a swift kick pushes the donkey off the trail, sending him plunging to his death as she shouts, Strike three.
To her husband’s horror, he had to ask, "Why did you do that?’
She simply replies, Strike one.
As shocked as I was, I felt the tension in the class dispel the negative tension. A much welcome change and this wasn’t the first time Tony’s humor and positive outlook on life set a positive tone for the course.
Years later, our paths crossed again, and as lead on a project, I was able to have Tony on my team. It didn’t matter the assignment I gave to him, he took it with zest and completed without complaining and did so on a timely manner. You see, back in the day, resentment often ruled when it came to a female leading a team and often pushback was the name of the ‘game’. No so with Tony, and the respect he showed me has never been forgotten.
This isn’t the first of Tony’s muses I’ve read, and as I mentioned earlier, he has many talents. Along with his expertise in several disciplines of the
