Chapter 1
THE BEGINNING
This strange and bizarre Historical World War Two Story begins in January 1905 on Ellis Island in New York City, New York Harbor. As required at the time all new immigrants had to pass through the U.S.A. Federal Immigration Inspection Station located there. A young German couple Mr. and Mrs. John Paul Bran immigrating to the U.S.A. (United States of America) to seek Pollical Freedom from a War destroyed Europe with more war looming on the horizon finally arrive, Thank you Dear Lord (TYDL). This young couple has just landed safely after eight terrifying days at sea on an overloaded German Tramp Steam Ship owned and operated by one of the many greedy German Shipping Companies now operating at that time.
As required by the U.S.A. Federal Border Laws; Official Passports, Visas and other movement papers were required which most of these people did not process. These folks were separated and retained so that movement papers could be prepared and processed allowing them to enter the U.S.A. If not cleared they were returned back to where they came from.
These folks that were retained were labeled WOPS
(Without Papers); a term of resentment at that time but now considered endearing. Like many of the immigrants John Paul and his wife Dora Alice Bran were hard working blue collar folks and like so many others they brought many needed skills to the U.S.A, TYDL. Also, like so many others John and Dora settled in New York City. John took a twelve hour a day job delivering ice and Alice took a job working as a scullery lady in a Bakery. After a few years of hard work, they saved enough money and were able to relocate to Newport News, Virginia where John was offered and took a job in the local Newport Ship and Dock Company (NS&DC) as a coppersmith. Dora settled down as a fulltime housewife and expectant mother. On April 04, 1910 Dora gave birth and delivered their only spoiled rotten child who grew up as a Nerdy little brat. He was named after his grandfather John Albert Bran.
As a young man John, the Nerd worked hard at his school studies and became known as the Achiever
. After graduating from Newport News High School in June of 1927; with no jobs available at the NS&DC John along with some other close friends were recruited by and join the local U.S. Army National Guard as fulltime military staff members.
John’s first line of duty in the military of course was Basic Training which he accomplished with no problems at the U.S. Army Training Center Fort Knox, Kentucky. After the usual eight weeks of basic training, he returned back home for the usual thirty days of military earned leave time. After his leave time was up, he was ordered to report to Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia to study his assigned Military Occupation Status (MOS) in Espionage & Intelligence (E&I) procedures, (Spying). This type of MOS was right up John’s alley as he studied E&I in High School and enjoyed it as a hobby especially learning to Convert Secret Codes to Cyphertext Copy. Another huge plus in John’s favor was he could read, write and speak perfect German. Both of his parents were born and raised in Billsbracken Germany just outside of Hamburg and as a German custom raised John to speak the German language along with his native English language.
After completing his Military MOS studies at Fort Belvoir John returned home to Newport News and went to work full time in the Local Army National Guard Headquarters Battery, E&I Section. This was a job he had hoped for and was well qualified to receive. Life is good, fast and things are going great for a very young highly advanced seventeen year old boy/man.
After about four months of hard work the Headquarters Battery Commanding Officer Captain Harry Hilling along with First Sergeant Benjamin Ackers called John and requested, he report to their combined upstairs office. John reported as ordered and right away felt a sense of urgency on their part. Captain Hilling told John to take a seat that they had a new assignment instore for him they needed to discuss and go over with him ASAP. John thinks to himself; oh, shit what the fuck is this all about?
John, we have received an urgent request from Fort Belvoir requesting you and your special E&I services. John, thinks again to himself oh shit now what? It sure sounds like the shit has hit the fuckin fan somewhere, pack up your duffle bags, drop your drawers and bend over everything has been decided but the color of the Vaseline. Both Ben and Harry look at the expression on John’s face and laugh. Hell, John do not get upset it’s not the end of the World it’s a new job assignment with a nice promotion plus the job is related to your trained MOS line of work.
Sir will you two ass holes (AH) quit the bull shit (BS), what is my new fuckin assignment all about? John you are being restationed back to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The E&I folks up there are calling all over for excellent people with your MOS to come onboard as soon as possible (ASAP) to work and teach in their U.S. War Department Office located on Base. John your new undercover position will be as a Secret Agent with the Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S.). When you trained for your MOS there you impressed them so much with your achievements and E&I knowledge they want you onboard full time. John, they want to continue to train you further as a Counterspy E&I agent. They want to train you to become a full time O.S.S. Counterspy.
Holy shit Captain Hilling sign me up and when do I leave? Captain Hilling this is my lifelong dream as instilled in me by an old Grammar School teacher and ex O.S.S. Agent Allen Amott. Ben what did I tell you! Great Captain Hilling but I am not happy to be losing my best E&I man here at Headquarters. Who do I replace Private First Class (PFC) John Bran with? Your problem Ben not mine, as Harry just laughs. Ben gets up shakes his head and states; every time I get a good new man I really need and can use some son of bitch (SOB) steals him away.
Captain Hilling when do you want me to leave and who do I report too at Fort Belvoir to start my new assignment? Let’s see John I have your new orders already cut here on my desk. John today is October 24, 1927; can you pack up and get ready to leave Newport News by October 31, 1927? Yes Sir, it will be a push but I can arrange that! Great I will get your official orders cut to reflect that and purchase your Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Railroad train tickets to Fort Belvoir to suit. Here, I can give you this now; two hundred dollars in allowances up front and three days of travel per-diem. If for some reason you will need more funds keep all your receipts and the Base Army Paymaster at Fort Belvoir will reimburse you. Staff Sergeant (SSgt) John Bran thank you for your expedient cooperation on this important assignment as they need your support ASAP.
Captain Hilling, you just addressed me as SSgt! Yes, take these new SSgt stripes and sew them on your travel fatigues, your new assignment comes with this promotion attached. Sir that’s a two jump step in rank, SOB! Goodbye SSgt John Bran, good luck and keep us all here at home posted and make us all proud. Thank you Captain Hilling I will do my very best. John stands, snaps too, salutes and shakes Captain Hilling’s and Ben’s hands and leaves.
October 31, 1927. Monday morning about 0600Hr a very young aggressive John Bran steps aboard a C&O passenger train at the Huntington Park Terminal on Warwick Road along with a few other Military personnel and Military family groups from nearby Army Camps. As he later finds out, most like him are headed for Fort Belvoir. He finally gets his over stuffed duffle bag and a small suitcase in the overhead baggage rack above his seat. No seating problems as the passenger train car is almost empty. He finds the seats are comfortable and the backs tilt back to allow for a reasonable nap on what he remembers after basic MOS training as a fourteen hour train ride if they are lucky.
As the train jerks and starts to move out he looks up and sees an old worn out C&O Conductor passing through the car punching tickets and boarding passes. He pats himself on the back as he was smart enough to place his tickets in an accessible fatigue jacket pocket. Directly behind the old conductor he sees a beautiful young girl pushing a small serving cart with assorted snacks, wrapped plain bologna and cheese sandwiches, soft drinks, milk and hot coffee. Great as he is hungry and tired and could eat a horse. Getting up at 0400Hr to catch a fuckin troop train does not hit on shit that’s for damn sure. As she stops beside his seat, she smiles and says soldier pick something you would like it’s going to be a long trip. John thinks to himself a little pie at the Y
would be nice can you sit on my face, HA, HA! Of course, he knows better laughs and settles for a bologna cheese sandwich, a small bag of his favorite glazed donuts and a cup of hot black coffee. As he reaches for his wallet to pay this beautiful waitress, she tells him no charge Sergeant the C&O railroad company does not require military personnel and their families to pay for basic food snacks and drinks, a Company policy. Call me if you would like something else. SSgt these same rules apply for food served in the dining car as long as you order off the General Menu. She winks and says go early as the dining car usually fills up quick. John winks back and says thank you!
John now relaxed and settled in sits back enjoys his food and gets ready for his long trip to Fort Belvoir and his new assignment. He does find out as they travel along that this train is far from being an express as it seems to stop at every little piss stop; Lee Hall, Williamsburg and a few others as well as a lengthy lay over in Richmond, Virginia. Each stop adds more passengers and his quiet empty passenger car is now full and noisy as they continue on to Fort Belvoir. Most of these folks like himself are headed out to except new assignments. You do not have to be a genius to realize something big is taking place in this World of ours
