The Boy Who Lost Magic - Heidi Gisele Borges

    Prologue

    I

will tell you a big secret that everyone should know: every child is a fantastic being, a magic being!

Okay, you can say it isn’t so secret and you’re right! However, it isn’t that obvious to some adults because they may not remember how it is to be a child or because they may not dream anymore, let alone make the dreams, they once had, come true.

The dream is our magic! It is what everybody has and what everybody should cultivate through a lifetime in order to achieve self-improvement and to be happy forever.

Children can hear the beautiful sounds of Nature, see beyond the most ordinary colors, but some grown-ups get so used to seeing those colors that they rarely notice the beauty contained in their hues, how they complement each other and reach perfection together!

Without making any great effort, kids can see the magic happening everywhere, all the time! They can feel it, make it happen and show it. It was supposed to be natural to every person. Yet, to the despair of many, including mine, unfortunately, most part of them loses magic when they grow up. These kids stop dreaming.

This is the case of the little ones who want to grow up. Take it easy, dear reader or listener, don’t rebel yourself! I agree with you, it’s such an absurd, but they exist.

There are children who are forced, by some adults, to keep their dreams eternally inside a tiny box or any other safe place, far from the big ones’ eyes.

And some children may surely be a little careless and just forget where they left their dreams for a while, but to everyone’s fortune, especially the kids’, most part of them is recovered.

To the general joy, the magic was hidden there, somewhere, among toys and a spider’s web, and at last, the dream is ready to become real.

The truth is that magic never leaves us, it is always the opposite, observe this! When we have a dream, we are happy, and when we let it go, our lives turn out to be so empty and dull that things stop making sense, we lose track of what makes us happy. It’s like having a hole inside.

It’s very sad when those little ones become adults and never return to rescue their dreams. After all, as it is known, a dream only comes true for those who believe it. Because of it, some adults, who don’t dream anymore, call it misplaced illusion.

It is necessary to say that some adults don’t have the will to believe certain happenings, mainly when they aren’t able to comprehend some events or call on a very insane theory to explain things in practice, so they claim that magic is an illusion, a hallucination, among other statements. Nevertheless, they actually give dreams those names because they are jealous of children.

Do you want to prove it? So imagine you and your neighbors having a conversation about a magic being sitting on the sink, with huge naked feet, dirty of clay, shaking them into a bowl full of dirty dishes. Suddenly, he starts eating the sliced carrot you’d use in the salad you were preparing for your lunch.

Good morning, Marvin, the elf on the sink, would say. How succulent your garden is. Is this carrot from the garden? Congratulations! It’s delicious, he’d add between one bite and another.

No, it would be impossible, the neighbors would think. So they would laugh, somewhat embarrassed, thinking it was a joke, and then, noticing that you really meant it, they would make serious speeches about how such thoughts were figured out due to sun rays, even if it’d occurred at night.

Some people do need an evidence to prove that they aren’t wrong. They search for explanations to everything, and at the same time, they don’t see – or don’t want to see – that the only truth consists on believing in dreams and being happy this way. How is it possible to read a good story without worrying about reality? Obviously they will rarely confess that their world is sad and gloomy; meanwhile the children’s world is full of joy, colors and magic.

When a child wants to grow up, the magic hides itself in horror, sadness and anguish. What few people know is that, sometimes, the magic finds other owners, at least for a while, even when it avoids being found, because a dream is loyal to its original owner for sure. And there are gentle adults who save and feed their own magic, remaining as kids inside their hearts. These people find and return the dream to its real owner when they have the chance to do so. This is how a wonderful new friendship between magic and its children begins.

The dream had always been there, peeping at them with colorful and shining eyes, looking forward to being rediscovered by its big people who are tired of, or pretending to be tired of, being adults, desiring to go back to their childhood.

Notice that nobody gets tired of being a child, and each of these people has their own magic which, as it has already been said, is their dreams, but some persons are so busy with their work or focused on trying to impress their wealthier neighbors or too much worried about buying a new TV that they simply forget about it.

In addition, there is nothing better than being a full-time kid. Running, playing, being enchanted by the rain, by the flowers, by a smile, and also by a train which isn’t just a choo-choo anymore, this is what adults who intend to know everything would claim, because for them, nothing is brand new anymore.

Even though people grow up, there is no need to stop being happy or to give up on living in a magical world, of getting delighted with beauties and discoveries.

Ah, and how good, peaceful and joyful we feel when we exchange simple stares with a magical being, even if it is an elf with dirty feet, eating a carrot.

But I know we’d better stop talking and go straight to the point.

I was told this story. It is full of dreams, some of them had been found, others had been lost; and magical beings. It is about a man named Conrad, Mr. Conrad Jr., but it begins when he hadn’t received the title of Mister yet, and was horribly forced to leave his magic, his dreams.

Or this is what people who had lost their magic long ago believed.

    Our story begins like this:

Daniel Conrad was happy and appreciated his childhood...

Oh, before we continue, as I’m telling the story, I must ask the kids from this place or from other worlds, who are reading or listening to this, to go to the bathroom right now if they need to, since we aren’t going to stop this journey back to the past. Thinking twice, of course, if someone feels sleepy, we’ll make a pause and keep on later.

Now hurry up! The story is about to start…

Is everybody back? Very well, let’s restart this trip… where did I stop? Oh,
