    1 Dog gone

amien, a two-year-old Doberman Pinscher was fond of attacking small animals ever since Angela Palmer brought him home when he was a puppy.

His first victim was Sydney Palmer’s four-year-old Hemingway cat named Romeo. Romeo had been around dogs all his life. Whenever Sydney had a play date at her friend’s houses who had dogs, she would always take Romeo, and there was never an issue with them. However, this was not the case with Damien.

Romeo was sitting on the couch watching Angela set down the dog cage. Damien’s eyes narrowed when he made eye contact with the feline. As soon as Angela opened the cage door, he shot out like a Greyhound at the racetrack. He crossed the room with two leaps and caught Romeo’s hind legs in his mouth as he leaped off the couch.

Luckily for Romeo, Jerry Palmer, Angela’s dad, was sitting next to him and was able to grab the dog by the neck. Jerry had to cut off Damien’s oxygen by squeezing his neck in order to force him to release the cat. Romeo was not happy with the fourteen stitches he had to get, and Damien was not happy with Jerry for choking him. From that day on Damien held a grudge.

Officer Jerry Palmer was the only dog handler with the Chester, South Carolina Police Department. Jerry joined the department in 2006 after returning from serving four tours in Afghanistan as an Army K-9 trainer. He met his wife, Angelique, in the small town while he was training at the police academy. She was teaching ethics when they made eye contact and fell in love. They were married a year later.

Jerry Palmer Jr. was born later that year followed by Angela Jèrri, nicknamed AJ, three years later. Three more years passed before Sydney joined the Palmer clan. The last addition was Jatarah, who took only two years to join the Palmer house.

No one was more upset about Romeo’s injuries than Sydney who watched her cat being used as a chew toy. She vehemently begged Jerry to shoot him in the head and then set him on fire. When he told her it was divine to forgive, Sydney asked that he give her the gun and forgive her after she shot Damien in the head.

How about if I train Damien not to attack Romeo? Jerry asked.

Not good enough, snapped Sydney. I want him gone.

Wait a minute, little sister, Angela said. When Romeo tore up my new blouse and skirt when he used them as a ladder to climb up in the closet, did I tell Dad to drown him?

    Yes, you did.

Oh, well, I was just mad at the moment, but when you argued that he was just a kitten and didn’t know any better I forgave the little fur ball. Well, Damien is just a puppy and didn’t know better either. Now fair is fair.

    She’s right, Sydney, Jerry agreed.

I’ll tell you what, Sydney, Angela said. You can have one of my Doja Cat posters. How’s that?

It only took Sydney a second to accept the offer, but she never accepted nor forgave Damien. Jerry sort of successfully managed to socialize Damien with cats, but only where Romeo was concerned. Other cats and small animals, in Damien’s mind, were fair game.

The first victim the six-month-old Damien got was Sarah Magg’s Yorkshire Terrier. Sarah thought it would be a good idea for seven-pound Tiki to meet their new dog neighbor across the street. She didn’t seem to notice the sixty-pound Damien licking his chops as she approached with the colorful snack. Sarah left with half of her ponytail, and Tiki left missing a part of her tail.

What did I tell you, Angela? Jerry asked angrily.

I wasn’t my fault, Dad. She came skipping over with her blonde ponytail flipping from side to side. Before I could tell her not to come over, she let Tiki run up on Damien. They sniffed each other and then it happened.

    When what happened?

Well, Dad, Tiki started whining like she was scared and started backing away from Damien. That’s when he clamped down on her rump as she tried to run away. Mrs. Maggs grabbed Tiki and yanked her from his mouth. That’s when Damien leaped up and grabbed the ponytail.

Did he obey your command to release?

Yes, as soon as I said out, he sat down with the ponytail dangling from his mouth. How bad is Tiki?

Well, she won’t be chasing her tail anymore, that’s for sure, Sydney quipped.

Junior, who was sitting at the kitchen table, laughed aloud and patted Damien on the head.

Good Damien, he said. I can’t stand that rat dog yapping at 2 in the morning.

That’s not nice, Junior, Angelique said, drying the last lunch plate. Tiki wouldn’t bark at 2 a.m. if your friends didn’t make so much noise trying to sneak you in at that time of the morning. Oh, which reminds me, you’re grounded for a week.

Sydney and Angela laughed as they watched their big brother beg for a lighter sentence. His appeal to his dad fell on deaf ears.

I wanted you grounded for a month, but your soft-hearted mom talked me down, Jerry said. You should be down on your knees thanking your mom.

Thanks, Mom, Junior said. I really appreciate it.

Then how come you aren’t down on your knees?

Mom! Junior said, dropping to his knees and making everyone laugh.

However, Sarah was not laughing when she went to court to have Damien euthanized. The only thing that saved Damien was the fact that Tiki was not on a leash and the judge felt that Damien was protecting Angela. Sarah was not happy with that ruling. In fact, a month later she sold her house and moved to Georgia.

The next incident occurred on Damien’s first birthday. Angela and her girlfriend, Renee, decided to hold a birthday party for Damien at the local dog park. Renee remarked how cute Damien looked with his birthday hat on his head. Angela had just cut a piece of cake for Damien when Ally, a Toy Poodle belonging to Gail Reilly, jumped up on the table and took a bite. Ally kept her tail but lost an ear during the 10-second attack.

Jerry wasn’t upset with Angela because Damien did what any dog would do when another animal comes near them when feeding. Plus, the fact that he responded to her command to release Ally showed she was still in control. Gail was understanding and apologetic, but never returned to the park again. Damien dodged a bullet that time.

However, he did not dodge the ass whooping that came the following Saturday at the same dog park. For the past several months, Evan Klein’s German Shepherd, Rocky, had tolerated the roughhousing by Damien because of the size advantage he had. But Damien made the mistake of taking kindness for weakness and nipped at Rocky’s hindquarter.

Damien was knocked off balance by the speed at which Rocky spun around and dropped his 100-pound body on top of him. The German Shepherd’s 238-pound bite clamped down on Damien’s neck causing him to yelp in pain. Evan had to smack Rocky with the leash to get him to break the death bite. This time it was Damien who received the stitches. The only two people who were unmoved about his injuries were Sydney and Romeo.

Angelique was getting fed up with Damien’s antics and suggested that he was one of those dogs that couldn’t be socialized. Jerry refused to accept that conclusion because he never had any more issues with Romeo and he was never aggressive to any humans. However, having to pay for the poodle and terrier vet bills was biting into the Palmer vacation savings. Angelique made it clear in no uncertain terms that if one more incident occurred, Damien and Jerry would be in the doghouse.

That incident occurred three weeks later when one of Mei Ling Chang’s outdoor cats chased a lizard over the adjoining backyard fence. Chucky,
