The Fallen Chronicles
Book One: Heaven
By: Anne R. Key
My brethren be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
-Ephesians 6:10-13
Then war broke out in Heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back.
-Revelations 12:7
Chapter One
God’s army stood with swords drawn, bows ready, lances sharp. They were led by Jehovah’s daughter, Narcissus. She was fierce both in battle, and her beliefs. Her bright silver armor amplified her long platinum hair, and deep emerald, green eyes. She was a statuesque beauty with a golden glow to her porcelain skin.
She watched the other side of the field, waiting for their enemies to show themselves. The fallen armies were nothing if not persistent and word had traveled that they were now being led by Lucifer’s oldest son, Solstice, who was said to be blood-thirsty and ruthless. Narcissus was not looking forward to more blood being spilled.
She had spoken to her father many times, trying to get him to agree to finally resolving all this conflict. She had thought that by putting herself on the battlefield he would finally agree, wanting her to have nothing to do with such bloodshed. However, even this act did not dissuade him. So, here she sat, on her loyal white stallion, Chrysalis, waiting for the enemy to emerge from the tree line that they could not see through even on the brightest of days. Jehovah was adamant that if Lucifer and his demons were going to insist on continuing the childishness of it all, that he would never yield, no matter how much blood was shed. Apparently, even if it was his own daughters. She had forced herself to believe that it was because of his confidence in her skills in battle, because to think anything else just made her too sad.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of waiting, their enemy’s presence emerged from the trees. The massive fallen hoard covered from one side of the 8-mile-long line of trees to the other and went back into the darkness. Hell held hoards upon hordes of demons. Some were humanoid, some goblin and ogre-like, while others appeared to be gigantic forms of all manner of beasts you could imagine. The worst of the beasts would be the Hell Hounds, but Narcissus heard no ear-piercing howls traveling from the forest, so she was thankful that it seemed they were not among the army.
She hated the Hounds. They were vicious, blood-thirsty, and extremely hard to kill. They moved extremely fast for beasts that stood sometimes 9 feet or taller and healed almost instantly unless you hit them exactly right. The ogre and goblin types of demons were vicious, but moved rather slow and sporadically, like they lacked the capacity to plan movement. The humanoid ones were as powerful as most angels, skilled fighters and highly intelligent. They were the original fallen angels or the descendants of them. Many of them having exceptionally rare and unique talents due to the combination of corrupted angelic blood lines and the beast types that surrounded them. They had caused the existence of several different kinds of were-beasts in many different realms and were all considered abominations in the eyes of those still loyal in Heaven. She still did not know the full story about the Hell Hounds. No one knew a lot about them. Maybe that was why she hated to have to deal with them.
As she sat waiting, observing, and studying the army before her, it silently parted in the center after a moment and a black horse carrying a black armored warrior came to the front of the army. She could only assume that the black knight was Solstice. She pulled her helmet from where it rested on her saddle and placed it on her head. She had heard too many stories of Solstice to want him to realize she was a woman.
Solstice held one arm up and motioned to move forward. Heaven’s army stood at the ready as the enemy army moved closer and closer. Hands tightened on weapons, ready for the moment that the first blow would be thrown. Then, to the surprise of them all, Solstice made another motion and the whole army came to an instant halt thirty feet from where they stood. Solstice alone moved forward once he was sure that his army had fully stopped as ordered. He stopped ten feet from where the front line of Heaven’s army waited, looking at one another in confusion. Jehovah’s advocate, Raziel, who was on the horse right next to Narcissus motioned for the army to hold where they stood, casting a glance at Narcissus making sure she knew it meant double for her. She rolled her eyes at him but nodded that she understood and would follow orders. Raziel was tall, lean, and had blue eyes and brown hair. He was adored by many, but a constant annoyance to her. He tended to help her father treat her as if she was a child. She could not help but think that maybe Solstice would knock the chip off his shoulder as she watched him cross the small gap toward the black knight. She smiled to herself as she waited and watched.
No one could hear the exchange, and the conversation ended quickly. As Raziel rejoined them, yelling for battle, the black knight lifted his sword and motioned for his army to charge. His army surged forward, as did hers. The battled seemed to rage on and on with no end in sight. Dead angels and demons littered the ground and stained it red. Rain began to pour down, as if the very sky was sobbing and weeping for those that were falling. Amid the battling masses, the shining silver of Narcissus’ angelic blade slammed with shattering force against the black, red-glowing blade of Solstice. They fought, but neither was touched by the other. Their fight drew the attention of all the demons and angels around them. All other fighting stopped, and it seemed that whoever won in the battle between Narcissus and Solstice would carry the victory of the day.
Finally, Solstice caught Narcissus with the hilt of his massive sword, knocking her helmet from her head. Solstice froze instantly and stepped to avoid her sword coming down where he had been standing, causing her to stumble from the momentum of the blade. Until that moment, only Heaven’s army had known who it was Solstice fought. He now stood, mesmerized. Her helmet rolled across the grass, her hair shimmered as rain dampened it and plastered it around her face. Regaining his senses, Solstice jammed his sword into the ground and removed his helmet.
Since when does a princess fight a battle of men?
He asked, looking down at her.
Anger flashed in her eyes as she stood and met his gaze. He was tall, well over six feet, and his eyes were a deep violet, made more vibrant by his shoulder-length black hair that hung around his face. Even more handsome than she remembered hearing from the rumors. She copied his gesture with her own blade and tossed her hair away from her face.
Around the same time a prince of Hell came off his high horse and fought instead of reading books.
He could not help but to smile at her remark. The demons and angels around them all gasped. None of the angels would have dared to speak to Solstice that way due to his violent reputation, and none of the demon horde had ever heard anyone brave enough to make such comments. She was not afraid of him and did not seem to see why everyone else was. There was more to him than just violence and bloodshed, a gentleness he was hiding deep inside himself, and she could sense it. He saw who she was and stopped fighting her instantly. Something about that gesture alone made her feel safe in his presence and she knew he would not harm her and would allow no harm to come to her if he could help it.
Well, I will not forever be known as the one who killed Jehovah’s beautiful daughter. This battle is done.
Narcissus blushed deeply, and both sides gasped in shock. They had never heard of Solstice Black being lenient, caring who he killed, or withdrawing from battle. All everyone on the field had known was that if Solstice were among the ones fighting that there would be a massive body count, and no surrender. It would be fought to the last man standing, and it was always him left standing.
Solstice, your father will not approve of this!
A menacing-looking demon shouted to him. Narcissus saw an
