I have read and studied Money from the Master’s Hand cover to cover. It has greatly enlightened, inspired, and challenged me in areas of finances I have not yet considered. Not to mention, Jason’s unique sense of humor has kept me laughing the entire time. Even greater than having read his book, I personally know Jason. He is one of my all-time best friends. I can fully attest to his integrity, character, and perseverance as a minister and leader. He is a generous soul who truly cares about helping people succeed in their personal management of money. Jason, and his wife Ashleigh, have lived on both sides of the financial spectrum. Therefore, they possess the gift and authority to set people on a prosperous path with their finances. Prepare for change!

Money from the Master’s Hand is one of the most valuable books, on personal finance, that I have ever read. As a leader, who helps people change their lives for the better, I am acutely aware that so much of the personal finance world is dominated by people and institutions selling products that only confuse people and creates more problems… this is not one of those kinds of books! This book gives hard-to-find, practical, life-changing advice about how to deal with financial problems; and gives valuable keys on how to elevate your personal financial walk into a place of freedom and abundance.

Jason Mayfield is more than just a great influencer and author, he is authentic and lives by the advice articulated in this book. It has worked for thousands of others, and it will work for you. Read and apply its wisdom!

    Pastor Shane Warren

    The Bend Church

Money from the Master’s Hand is a great resource for any pastor, leader, and believer. Jason did an excellent job of making prosperity very accessible and showed efficient ways to build wealth and live free from the bondage of debt. True prosperity is not manifested by just quoting verses and waiting for a mystical slot machine to rain money from the sky. God has principles for us to follow that causes us to be conduits of blessing to the nations, so we have enough to care for those we love and to give to every good work. Jason shows us what that looks like and then gives a plan on how to do it. This book is easy to understand, and full of truth; add that with Jason’s unique brand of humor and you’re in for a treat. I highly recommend it.

I have had the privilege of witnessing Jason Mayfield step into his God-given wholistic revelation concerning money over several years. Not only have I seen it up close, but I have personally been impacted by it. Most people who write about money tend to have either a theological or practical approach, but Jason’s book seamlessly deals with both sides of the spectrum in a way that’s efficient and practical. Money from the Master’s Hand is both biblically enriching and practically grounded with advice to manage money in a way that honors God and blesses the steward.

    Pastor Andy McMillan

    Oasis Church

When Jason Mayfield sent me a copy of Money from the Master’s Hand I was a bit hesitant. As a fourth-generation Southern Baptist pastor, I come from a different theological camp than Jason. While this makes our friendship a wonderful and challenging one, I wasn’t sure how it would translate on paper. Like our friendship, I was happily surprised.

If you’re like me, you typically cringe at the phrase prosperity gospel because you’ve seen it misused and abused by so many. I assure you this isn’t one of those books, and Jason isn’t one of those guys.

I was challenged and moved to action. My wife and I followed his advice to budget, to dream, and to feel the pain of living within our means. Since reading, God has already blessed us in ways we could have never dreamed of. My faith was stirred, and my heart was motivated to believe for greater things. Though you wouldn’t expect it, this book also gave me an even greater appreciation of the finished work of Jesus Christ!

I came to this book with an open mind, and I pray you do as well. I believe it can increase your influence and income to the glory of God.

    Pastor Trey Van Camp

    Passion Creek Church

Money from the Master’s Hand is one of the most practical, balanced, and helpful books I have ever read on money. There is a beautiful bridge between the supernatural aspect of financial literacy and the physical implications that come from handling our money God’s way. Jason Mayfield has been uniquely positioned to impact how people perceive the spiritual impact of finances in a unique and refreshing way. If this material is genuinely implemented, I am confident it can transform anyone’s financial situation.

    About Jason Mayfield

I almost died writing this book

After finishing the chapter about going debt free, Ashleigh and I got Covid-19. Ashleigh went down hard and fast but had mostly recovered in about two days. I, on the other hand, experienced a much slower regression; and over the next week, things only got worse to the point that I ended up in the hospital’s I.C.U. for nearly nine full days with full-on pneumonia. They had significant trouble getting my oxygen levels up, and honestly it is the most afraid I’ve ever been. I thought I was going to die for several days.

Fortunately, I didn’t. As a matter of fact, I’m writing this about 48-hours after being out of the hospital, rebelling against my home oxygen mask for the last few hours. I’ve even made my own dinner!

Ashleigh has been taking the most loving care of me and I have never been more grateful to have my family in my life. My kids will probably have a new dad, when he exits the bedroom more permanently, in the next week or so.

I wanted to take a minute and do two things, even though I’m not feeling very well.

First, I just wanted to write some words. This book is my major project of focus in this season, but obviously the events of the last few weeks have kept me from writing. So… words on the page. Those are good.

Secondly, I want to encourage you. I know that people have been watching me go through this Covid-19 battle and have wondered quietly if I was going to back off my belief that God wants us to prosper. The simple answer – no. I haven’t backed off.

Look, this has been a scary situation, no doubt, but we’re going to go through scary situations. You’re going to face trouble. You’re going to experience problems. You’re going to break an arm. You’re going to get sick beyond your imagination. Things are going to happen. It’s just the way it is.

Do not be afraid! Just because some things get upset in your life doesn’t mean you’re out for the count.

I happen to be reading a biography on Ulysses S. Grant right now. He’s at a point in his life where he’s exited military service, has little-to-no money, depends on the haughty generosity of his in-laws, and is experiencing debilitating failure.

Reading about his life, I am encouraged to see a man who, in the mere moments before destiny takes him by the shoulders, is struggling beyond what he believes he is capable; Soon he will be set in both positional and moral authority to contribute some of the most positive impact in United States history. Few men have been able to accomplish what he did.

When you walk through difficult and dark seasons of your life, I admonish you; look forward, trust the Lord, keep the faith, take care of the immediate, and then continue marching forward!

My Thoughts in the Dark Moments

I want to share this because it’s incredibly pertinent to the thesis of this book.

I was asked recently how being faced with eternity impacted me. I’m going to be honest, I never felt that way. Yes, I thought I was going to die for about two days, but I didn’t feel like I was facing eternity. I’ve been saved for over two decades and I’m comfortable with the idea of death.

There was a moment, however, when I was really thinking about whether or not I needed to jot down some basic financial instructions for Ashleigh. For the most part, she knows what to do; but we’re building this house right now and there’s a lot of money in these types of projects. Frankly, however, we hadn’t foreseen the need to have a now if I die in the next few months, conversation.

When I started to think things could end in death I thought, I wish I had some more cash on hand right now. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve got cash, but like I said, our money is more tied up than it has been because of the house and the other projects we’re working on. And so, more money was the thought that consumed my mind.

I’m telling you; I believe in having money! I believe in leaving money for people when you go.

Here’s the funny thing, as things started getting better in the hospital, you know what I thought? I wish I had more cash on hand, right now! When these issues of life come up, I’m telling you, you want to have money! I could stand for an additional $30k in my account, right now. And it’s not that we’re concerned about money, but I’d like to be less concerned about it! The best way to be less concerned about money is to have more of it!

I don’t know where I’ll place these notes in the book, but whether at the beginning or the end, let’s make sure we get your money right, we get your money growing, and we get your money to have a supernatural touch from heaven on it!

    In Jesus’ name!

    Part One

    Introduction

I’ve had it in my mind to write a book for quite some time now. I had gone so far as to outline and start writing my first book. That’s not this book. Nope, not this one, this one is the second book. Granted, I didn’t finish the first. So, does that make this the first or the second book? #mysteriesoftheuniverse

A book about money? Yeah. Never in my wildest dreams was I going to write a book about money as my first book – or ever!

By the end of this introduction, I hope to have explained why I’m writing a money book. However for now, suffice it to say, I must. I don’t want to… I have to.

    Story

When I take a birds-eye-view of my life, I can confidently say that 2013-2016 were without a doubt the worst years of my life. If not the worst, certainly the most difficult. But I feel like they’re the worst. The worst incidents I’ve experienced didn’t occur in the time frame, but holistically it was pretty bad.

In 2013, my second daughter was born, which obviously wasn’t a bad thing, in fact it’s a great thing. I love Ali! She’s my little baby gator! But the manner in which she was born was horrifying. She was born at 24 weeks (for the men reading, that’s 4 months early) and there was a high probability that she wouldn’t survive. We spent 3 months in the hospital with her and it was exhausting in every sense of the word.

To make that whole experience more intense, she was born on Easter Sunday and Ashleigh went into labor the night before. So, being a Pastor, this whole situation went down over the worst possible 48-hour period imaginable.

As soon as Ali had gotten a miraculous all clear from her doctors (roughly 9-months-old), something happened in my ministry. Things went sideways on me. There was a church leader who was my superior who had been involved in some activities that were not congruent with his position. (I’m tiptoeing pretty hard around this. If we were talking face to face, I’d tell you what happened. However, seeing as how I’m not trying to get sued today, I want to be careful about what I put in writing.) My wife and I were made aware of this leader’s behavior, and he knew we knew.

That leader, the one with the bad behavior, started using me as a deflection point. To his credit, it was a great tactical move, and it bought him a little more time before he was eventually exposed. Somehow, he was creating lots of problems around me, especially with other church leaders and our most influential volunteers. All of that was leading up to him firing me in June 2014.

To make matters worse, Ashleigh and I had made the intentional decision to start transitioning to senior pastor ministry. (We would have done this sooner, but the premature birth detour made the trip a little longer.) As a part of the church leaders’ campaign to save himself by causing me trouble, once we were gone from the church, he started causing me denominational problems.

We would send our resume to churches, go through the process, usually up to the last 2-3 candidates, and the entire process would end with us not being offered the position. There is no way I can adequately describe how perplexed we were. Understand this, we would go into many of these interviews and then have significantly supernatural occurrences that were obvious signs of confirmation. I’m not talking about getting goose pimples because it was a good interview. We would have pulpit search committee members who had been praying for things for years and when I got involved in the situation… BAM! Breakthrough! Right there on the spot.

What I found out later (coincidently from a multi-millionaire pulpit search committee member in Florida) is that at the final stages of the interview process, the church would call my denominational district office and they would give a bad reference and that would end the entire process. This was all because the pastor living an immoral lifestyle was feeding them false information.

In 2015, I decided to go back into an associate pastoral role that I didn’t have any desire to do. We moved to Florida to work at a church that thought it was better than it was, with a pastor who thought he was a bigger deal than he was, and I was miserable after about two weeks.

Now, even though I’m not a fan of that pastor, I’m thankful for him. This guy brought me into his church with a resume full of red flags and gave me a job. He was a lifeboat. On top of that, he got us to Florida, which is where we’d been wanting to move for several years. (We’d been living in Michigan, a climate for those with warmer blood than myself.)

In 2016, after a year at this church at which I was absolutely miserable, we mutually agreed that it was never going to work

Between the years of 2013 and 2016 I went through more disappointment and discouragement than I thought I could handle. This is the closest to the breaking point that I’ve ever been. Today, it’s nearly 5 years behind me and I still have to make sure that I manage emotions that come up as residual effects from the trauma.

And look, I know you can read the word trauma and think, Really Jason?! But, keep in mind, I just gave you a 10,000 feet view of 1,400 days in less than 800 words. For four years I was perplexed and unsettled. For four years I would ask daily, what the heck is going on?

The most difficult part of the entire season was the fact that I had built a reputation inside of a career that I was called to, and that I loved. I love the church. I love everything about it. I love all the stuff that goes into it. I love Sunday at 10am and Thursday at 7:17pm equally. When I lost the ability to function in that realm, at my highest capacity, it was devastating. But there’s another side I need to bring you in on…

    The Money

In 2014 I had served the Lord in a full-time ministry position for at least a decade. For roughly half that time, I made a decent wage, but for the other half I was barely surviving. My first year in ministry I was paid $400 per month and housed in a boy’s correctional facility in exchange for being a full-time church employee. I literally had a bed in the dormitory of a my kid is so bad I need to send him to a facility before he commits a crime that lands him in a juvenile detention center house.

After that, I was taking lower income positions for years. I would walk through the ministry doors that opened, and the ones that opened were low paying. (Not that ministry is the best career path for those seeking wealth.)

I’ll tell you this so I can paint a picture of my net worth for you.

I had approximately zero dollars to my name.

    Account balance: hahahahahahahahaha!!!

When things went down in Michigan and I lost my job, I was offered a severance package in exchange for my silence. Don’t say anything bad about the church or the leadership and we’ll continue paying you for 3 months.

Initially I declined the severance package. I wasn’t going to be bought. Period. I’m a man of integrity and I stand in a God-given authority that cannot be manipulated.

Then several of my closest friends got on the phone and said, Stop being an idiot and take the money. Your kids can’t eat integrity sandwiches. (I may have embellished the actual phone calls.)

My last Sunday was the first Sunday in June 2014. June + 3 months of severance got us through August.

How we survived September–February will always amaze me. This was a priceless moment in our family. We realized that Ashleigh had great money-making potential. A story I’m certain will come up at some point in this book.

In February, after being turned down for a senior pastor position (the one with the multi-millionaire who gave me the heads up about the bad references) I made a decision to go back into the associate pastor position I was trying to be done with. I had a job within a week.

Something happened in November, however, that changed our family forever.

    A Word From The Lord

On Thanksgiving Day 2014, Ashleigh and myself, along with the kids, were driving from Adrian, MI (our home) to Kalamazoo, MI to have dinner with Ashleigh’s family. As you can probably imagine, this wasn’t a trip I was thrilled about. I love Ashleigh’s family dearly. They have been extremely kind to me over the years. However, when you’ve been out of a job for several months and you’re not seeing much potential on the horizon, the in-laws aren’t the company you long for!

As we were driving west on Interstate 94, watching the snow get thicker and thicker, higher and higher, Ashleigh and I were thinking and talking and looking to our next step. At this point we felt we knew what it was and were certain it was going to happen, but the path to senior pastoring was looking less and less clear.

At some point during the course of the conversation I said, What if money wasn’t a factor. As soon as I said it my baby
