Winona turned off the bathroom lights, and walked out, grabbing a set of keys. Slipping out the patio doors of the hotel room, she sat across a formally dressed Andrew. As quickly as she looked at his face, she looked away, hiding from his prying gaze. She played with the keys in her hand.

Andrew let out a sigh and ran his fingers through his bleached hair, his neatly cut fingers parting the tresses like water. Leaning back in his chair, he looked around at the small but cosy space, the uncomfortable silence was interrupted by the gentle chime of Winona’s keys. Why are you here, Mom? he asked, even though he knew what her answer would be.

I’m not going back, Andrew, Winona finally said, eyes fixed on the vintage glass table that separated them physically and emotionally. She wiggled the keys a bit faster, the chimes sounding a bit more urgent.
