Book Preview: #1 The Support Group meets at the public library in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and provides community for people who have lost loved ones to suicide.

#2 However, in the past twenty years, a more conservative and pro-gun legislature and citizenry have relaxed restrictions governing practically every aspect of buying, owning, and carrying firearms in the state. As a result, gun injuries and deaths have risen.

#3 I traveled to Missouri to learn about people’s experiences living in an increasingly armed society. I spoke with people in small towns as well as larger cities, and found that the state had become more tense, polarized, and heavily armed.

#4 While many gun owners I spoke with saw the increased availability of firearms as a positive development, many others saw it as a double standard in which society coded white gun owners as protectors and black gun owners as threats.

I visited Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in December 2016. The city is named after Jean Baptiste de Girardot, a French soldier who established a temporary trading post in the area in the early eighteenth century. The area was heavily Republican in 2016.

The language of patriotism and protection collided with the memories of extraordinary trauma and pain for many of the people I spoke with.

    #7

The support group was extremely personal and isolating, but it also allowed the participants to share their experiences and coping mechanisms with one another.
