About this ebook

One of the most enigmatic Egyptian goddesses is Nephthys, the dark twin of Isis. In most major Egyptian tales, she plays major roles, but very little about her has withstood the test of time, so we are left having to piece her character together from various sources. This can be a daunting task, and one that does not encourage the casual or begi

    INTRODUCTION

Who is the dark feminine? What is she? How can we come to know her? What can she teach us about the world, and more importantly, what can she teach us about ourselves? Why would one want to work with her? Can she be addressed safely? And, what about sex identification and gender? Are there different mysteries for men than there are for women? Are her teachings only open to one or the other? There are many more questions than these, but these are some of the initial ones to ponder as you open this book and begin your personal exploration into the dark feminine.

There is a lot that has already been written about the dark feminine in other places, and it is not my intention to say things here that have already been said elsewhere, and in greater depth than I can cover in this chapter. However, I am going to cover some basic concepts and provide some unique insights from a magical perspective that will help in the reading of this material. When focusing on a particular subject, it is wise to create context. In this case, this means sharing a little bit about myself so that you can see where I’m coming from and make adjustments wherever you deem appropriate. The first thing to share is that I am a heterosexual male, and this alone, is a very valuable detail to note because if you don’t share that same perspective, you may find that some things I share are not in line with your thoughts and paradigm. This is OK as; I don’t have a monopoly on the market of knowledge concerning the divine feminine. I am also a magician with thirty years of experience in the western tradition, so my perspective is going to be different than someone who is new to this material, or who is approaching this from a different spiritual tradition.

First, let us focus on the divine from a western perspective. One of the broad teachings of divinity in the western tradition is that there are two parts to it, and it is wise to understand both, in order to increase one’s gnosis and wisdom. The first part is the one that we actively see in the world at large today, and that is the masculine side of divinity. Then, of course it becomes clear that the other side of divinity to be aware of is the feminine side.

The masculine side is that which corresponds to the father, and all things masculine, and to men in general. Biology and science can help us understand this, as the divine masculine is the generative principle. It is the principle of the seed, of going forth and injecting. It is the side of masculinity that embraces the mentality of men, in all forms, and thus we find the triplicity of ‘the warrior, the father, and the sage,’ active, in counterbalance to ‘the maiden, mother, and crone’ dimensions of the divine feminine.

Following the thoughts of Robert Graves, this is the ‘positive’ side of the equation. The positive being equated with generation, specifically the generation of life, in line with the positive terminal of a battery.

    However, the feminine divine is
