Academy Of Beasts XXVII - Becca Fanning

Chapter1

My body hit the gym mat with so much force, I swear, I felt every bone in my body rattle. " Gods. " I groaned and just lay there, staring up at the white ceiling. I didn’t want to move for the rest of the day, maybe ever.

The morning had gotten off to a rough start. Since I didn’t get much sleep last night, I woke up frazzled. I’d had yet another strange dream― if I could even call it that― about Leia. Or was it my mom again? Everything was melding together into one confusing blur in my mind. I really needed some rest.

Because I was exhausted, I was late for training. Of course, drill sergeant Dracus was not pleased. I paid the price for my tardiness with the most intense warm-up routine I’ve ever had. And that brings us to why I’m sprawled on the floor, with every inch of my poor body sore. Dracus decided that before we get into the whole learning how to isolate my powers thing, he’d see how good I was in a fight.

As it turned out… I still sucked! Worse, all the council boys were present to see how much I sucked.

Could my day get any worse? You know what they say when one thing goes wrong, everything starts to go wrong. On the other hand, since I was at my lowest, things could only look up from here. Right?

I sure hope so, I murmured.

What’s she mumbling about?

Fiona, are you alright?

There was a muttered expletive. Do you think she has a concussion or something? That was Ren’s voice, ringing with worry.

Enrique peered down at me and held up three fingers. Princess, how many fingers am I holding up?

Do you feel nauseous? Jasper stooped down, hands on his knees, his blue orbs focused on me.

Before I could respond to the barrage of questions, Dracus’s face appeared. Now, I was staring up at five concerned ―and very handsome― faces. Everyone, back off and give her some space.

Ugh. He must have read my mind. I wanted them all to go away. I hated having all of them witness my humiliation. Four faces disappeared, with a hum of sighs and complaints, leaving only Dracus.

He held out a hand. I was a little mad at him for being so tough on me this morning, so I hesitated. When he raised an inquiring brow, I reluctantly placed my hand in his. I was tugged upward until I was on my feet. The room wasn’t spinning, and I didn’t want to hurl, so I guess I wasn’t concussed. I blew a strand of hair that escaped my bun out of my face and gave Dracus a sheepish smile. So, how did I do?

A severe scowl adorned his face. You’re joking, right?

I shrugged. The disappointment in his tone so early made me feel awful.

That was horrible, his eyes narrowed, which shouldn’t be because you’ve far surpassed the beginner’s stage of combat. You were distracted.

No... I denied but stopped. I didn’t want to straight out lie to him. I was beyond distracted. The dreams featuring my mother and Leia I’d been having had been driving me crazy for days. I still had no idea what they meant. They were so bizarre. I was starting to think that it was all in my head. The dreams were definitely real. I mean, I wasn’t completely off my rockers. There was just a shadow of a doubt in my mind that they meant anything serious.

Open your eyes. Find out what happened. It’s time for me to know the truth.

That was the gist of my mother’s and Leia’s constant messages. They never said anything more. The thing is, I knew the truth about everything already. My eyes were most certainly open. Being dropped in the middle of a magical world took care of that.

Blowing out a long breath, I met Dracus’s questioning gaze. I’m just tired. Narrowed eyes were fixed on my face. His penetrating stare was so disconcerting, I started to shuffle from one foot to the other. I didn’t get much sleep, I explained. That much was true.

Something on your mind?

Uh… just nervous about the whole new training regimen you have planned.

His brows drew together. Which we haven’t started yet because you’ve been severely off your game.

Rubbing the back of my neck, I averted my gaze. I know. I’ll get it together. I promise.

I hated hiding anything from him. From any of the guys. We’d had the conversation more than once. If anything was bothering me, I should speak up. I wanted to, but I couldn’t. What if the dreams were nothing serious? I would just have gotten everyone worried for nothing. Things have been so good lately.

My gaze shifted to Theo, Enrique, Jasper and Ren. Enrique and Theo were play-sparing, and Ren and Jasper were deep in conversation about something. Look at them. Ren rarely interacted so easily with anyone. They seemed happy. Even Dracus had been less intense since the school year started. With the exception of that incident with The Officials, of course. I still hadn’t lived down that little hiccup… okay, it was a major one. I still wasn’t allowed back into any meetings.

You have my word, Dracus. I’ll do better. Come on, let’s go again.

You look like you're in pain.

I shook my head and winced. Nope. Right as rain. I can go all day.

He lifted a brow and poked me in the left side of my ribs so fast I didn’t have time to dodge him. Pain sliced through my side. Mother fu―

Right as rain, my royal ass, he bit out.

Grunting my pain, I felt heat infuse my entire face. Still, I glared at him. Hard. I hated when he caught me in a lie. He always had this haughty I knew it expression. Damn it. I was in so much pain. I took
