Birth name: Michael John Daniel Lindsey. I called him, Mikey. While I wrote this, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma. I struggled with wondering why. It was a true test of my faith. But God was faithful. The conflict matched so perfectly with the theme of this book that I immediately chose to dedicate this to him. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for him and Heaven, he entered eternity on 10/15/18. He never got to see this, but I know he’s here in spirit. So Mikey, this is for you, my dude!

Ah, where to start? So many people contributed to this book you hold in your hands or have displayed on your screen! Most of them may not even know it. But every encouraging word and expression of excitement at the coming of this story motivated me to see this through. They were so patient as well! A few have waited almost two years for this! To each and every one of you, thank you!
To my amazing CASA, Annie Twitchell, Abby Sowell, Isidora Gecan, and Naomi Chadwick, thank y’all so much for diligently working with me on this book! I couldn’t have done it without y’all!
As always, a huge thank you to my fam and their endless support!
And finally, the biggest thanks of all goes to God! I’m not being cliche. This is who I am. He is the only Reason I can write, the only true Source of peace and security when I drive myself crazy. When I am confident that no one will or would want to ever read my heart in these words, He is the whisper in my soul to remember Who I write for. He knows my strong desire, not for fame and fortune, but to simply make an impact, and preferably a good one. So know that there is more than just a thank you
in those two words to my God. It is the cry of praise and undeserving grace from the deepest part of me.
Chapter 1
Jewel hummed one of her favorite songs as she bustled about the kitchen preparing dinner. James and John, their seven-year-old twins, sat on a play mat in the living room entertaining their little sisters, Adira and Belle. The children’s laughter played like music to her ears. She loved this life of motherhood–sure it was hard, and sometimes even inconvenient–but there was a fulfillment in it that she had found nowhere else.
A smile lifted Jewel’s face as she thought of all the changes since marriage. Both she and her sister-in-law, Liberty, had had to adjust to staying at home full time. To compensate for their absence from the office, they each had a little space in their houses to help their husbands, Justice and Luke, with work whenever they could. Jewel also took the kids several times to visit the closest Houses of Healing, homes where people who’d been rescued from a trafficking ring could heal and prepare to reenter a normal life. The children’s smiles and baby talk were rays of sunshine to those hurting souls.
Checking the potatoes in the crock pot, a wave of sadness hit Jewel. Not all the rescued young people could handle the kids. They still carried heavy guilt, their emotions fragile. Unfortunately, it wasn’t uncommon for Justice and Luke to have to find runaways who had returned to their former lives simply because it was what they knew best.
A vibration pulled Jewel back to the present. Her special ringtone for Justice now accompanied the buzzing of her phone. She picked it up. Hey, honey, how’s it going?
We’ve got a problem.
He sounded confused and apprehensive.
What’s up?
It’d be better if I show you. We’re on our way.
We?
Yeah, Luke and Liberty are coming too.
Okay, are they bringing the kiddos?
Yeah, I think so.
Awesome! I’ll be waiting for you. Love you!
Love you right back!
She could hear a smile enter Justice’s voice, and she knew that she had succeeded in relaxing him.
Jewel hung up and pumped her fist like a football player. Yes!
She always loved to see her niece and nephews. Liberty and Luke had three kids; Dawn, William, and Peyton.
A new thought popped into her mind, and she grinned even wider. Adventure has come a courtin’.
After the call, Jewel kept an eye for Justice to pull in. Ten minutes later, their van came into view, and she hurried outside. He hopped out and caught her in his arms, giving her a kiss. Following close behind her came the kids. James and John slammed into their father, wrapping their little arms around his legs. Adira jumped up and clung to his neck, and Belle grabbed his hand saying, Up, up!
Justice laughed, and Jewel noticed the worry lines on his face disappear. After hugging each of them, he tossed Belle into the air, catching her in his strong embrace. Jewel watched, her face beaming, and he sent her a wink.
Liberty and Luke drove in right behind him and unloaded their pack of kids. After everyone recovered from being smothered in hugs, they all swamped the living room. The children spread themselves out on the floor to play while the grownups settled on the couches.
So.
Jewel kept her voice low since the kiddos were in the room. What’s up?
Liberty clasped her hands between her knees. Yes, do tell. What’s going on?
Justice pulled a letter from his back pocket. I found this letter in the mail at our office today. There’s no name, no return address, and whoever wrote it is not American.
Jewel raised an eyebrow as she reached for the paper. Interesting.
Flipping it over to inspect the front of the envelope, her eyebrows cinched together. Hm. It’s postmarked from Katy, so they must be close. I wonder why they wrote a letter instead of emailing or something.
An email can be traced, love,
Justice pointed out.
Good point.
Jewel smirked and opened the letter. She blinked in surprise. Now I know why you were so sure this person wasn’t American. It’s in Cyrillic.
So that’s what that is!
Luke smacked his forehead. Should’ve known that.
Sending a sheepish grin, he shrugged. Anyway, we thought it’d be better if we deciphered the language together.
Yes, much appreciated.
Liberty elbowed him. Especially, since apparently, you don’t know your alphabets.
Hey!
Luke reached to tickle her.
After swatting him away, Lib turned to Jewel. Got your laptop?
Of course.
Jewel winked and stood to grab it from her desk across the room.
Here.
She moved to sit by Liberty. Let’s squeeze on this couch, that way we can all see.
After everyone was situated, she unlocked it and pulled up a secure translating website. Changing the keyboard to Cyrillic, her fingers flew to type up the letter.
When Jewel finished, she clicked Go
and the beautiful spinning thingy started its dance. A few seconds later, the message appeared in English.
Dear Justin and Jules,
I need your help! I am being watched by a dangerous man, and I am scared for my
