    CHAPTER 1

    THAT MYSTERIOUS INNER LIFE

We are going on a joyful journey together. The direction of this trip will take us inwards and upwards.

Our inner life often feels foggy and vague, and it is so close up that it’s hard to get the picture into focus. Many of us are not good at going within ourselves, as it tends to be both confusing and solitary. So, most days the outer world wins the race for our focus.

A healthy human connects well inwards and outwards, where both domains fully contribute to the balance.

To gain better inner-awareness, you need some inroads into your own being. This book is about expanding those roadways. We will explore that subject together by applying a simple method of accessing your inner-space more fully.

We will approach the inner-life with breathing phrases, images and with music, so you do not lose interest. It is a more entertaining awareness expansion - or a meditation method.

Our greatest human adventure is the evolution of consciousness. We are in this life to enlarge the soul, liberate the spirit, and lighten up the brain.

    Tom Robbins. 20th century.

    WE ARE FULLY EXTERNALIZED

We all start as a fetus inside a mother in that warm and safe world. Through a dramatic birth we were thrust into the external world, to become a helpless little baby.

During early childhood we were connected to our inside-world. That inner-space blended well with the outside world in messy and mysterious ways. Growing up involved us fully with the external world. That is where we now flex our muscles in commanding ways. That strong outward-focus comes at a cost, as we lose the original connection to our inner-core. Slowly, the inside-world turns dark and difficult to comprehend. Many people come to avoid that space and see it as a murky maze. Others avoid it because of unresolved pain hidden on the inside. Therefore, we do not spend quality time there - and it is hard to know where to start.

For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.

Jesus, 1st century. (NKJV Bible Luke 17:21)

NOT RELIGION - JUST A SKELETON

Going within has become my safe space, and a source of great inner peace. I learned early to guard my inner-core from getting too involved in the outside drama of life. Not to say that my inner-space is all that neat and tidy, but it always provides understanding and insights, which apply to me personally.

Ancient wisdom has always pointed to the "Kingdom Within".

Your next question should then be: How do I get there?

This book is about developing inner awareness, that leads to the kingdom.

I will use short religious texts from different places to show you, that this is nothing new - it is the wisdom of the ages.

When I talk about meditation, you might think I am pushing some particular conviction, but that is not the case.

Meditation is a universal tool, not a faith to follow. It has the power to create a tranquil, relaxed mind. Meditation is a method of directing your attention away from many scattered thoughts - to a simple stream of thoughts, which are more in line with flow-states and deeper understanding.

You can be a sworn atheist, or follow whatever religion you want. I am here to simplify your travels to your inner-space and to help you access more of your own being. Just by doing that you might gain faith in a Higher Power, that fits your own understanding.

    THE SKELETON

Do not read this workbook fast, rather think about the concepts - and see if they are helpful enough to incorporate into your life.

I will use few words, as too many words muddle what I am trying to convey.

Instead, I will use some images - in place of lengthy explanations.

A simple skeleton for your thoughts is what I give. You will then build the soft tissues onto that skeleton, so it becomes a beautiful, working body for you.

In other words, you can adapt my words to your own system of thought.

To sum it up, I use breathing-phrases along with images to go inward. Once I am there - in awareness mode, I then prolong my stay by playing selected music. The music saves my brain from boredom, while it stretches my mindfulness sessions.

To become more aware - is to become mature and wise. True wisdom draws from the inside and outside world to give clarity and balance.

"Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart.

Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens."

    Carl Jung, 20th century.

    WHERE AM I COMING FROM?

All my life, I have been extremely interested in spiritual texts, and have read numerous books from many religions, with the aim of finding that - "Kingdom Within". Today I classify myself, as an imperfect follower of Christ.

I also grew up in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s with music being a major influence of my time. I remember well when the Beatles broke onto the scene in the early 60’s. Their sound was radically different and invasive. This euphoric music force acted like a youthful bulldozer on the culture of the time. The Beatles were then quickly followed by numerous other rock groups that kept pushing the way forward through the obstacles of the establishment - bands like the Stones, Moody Blues, Santana, Pink Floyd, Eagles and so on. That music force was tangible at the time - and in a speedy way it definitely changed behavior, fashion, outlook and much more. It is unprecedented in human history that sound waves, or music, would drive such a widespread societal change.

We were the Baby boomers a large generation - and we definitely tuned in. We would play the latest music-record, and listen without interrupting, (sometimes like 20-30 minutes). This intense listening would inform us of the fresh winds of change
