    Unexpected Fiancé - Selvi Mohan

    Chapter 1

The whole campus was buzzed with excitement. I, Teekshana looked at the people from my chair located at the back corner of the vast auditorium wearing a sarcastic smirk. The reason for the excitement for some people is because they are being part of the high-scaled drama and for the rest, it is to watch the high-scaled drama, unfold. My lips widened in a smug smile, seeing the giggles of the girls and the vane proud look on the boys’ faces. Feeling a gentle tap on my right shoulder, I turned to see the source of the disturbance.  My smile widened affectionately seeing one of my best friends.

Sanjari, her name, but we call her as Sany sat next to me pressing my favorite cold coffee into my palm.

Not joining the drama? she teased me with a little smile.

Well.. You know I have joined. I answered in short.

Really?? But why do I feel like you are not. she questioned and looked at me curiously.

That’s not my problem. I shrugged my shoulders carelessly.

Thinking about this weird drama, a bout of irritation washed over my face. I always considered myself to be very lucky in living a carefree and independent life, but this drama made me realize the futility of my so-called freedom. I was nearly pushed to the edge and cornered for the entire last month to join this ongoing circus. My College is considered to be one of the elite Colleges in the city.. No No.. It is the only elite College in the city whose students can only be from the richest of rich. I corrected myself. The main aspect of this College apart from the academic subjects, it also teaches more the world’s ways,  like who is who in the society, how to make connections, how to dress for the various parties, what to say and what not to say, how to learn the stock markets and the tricks rather than studying, playing, competing or knowing equality with other people. This definitely was not the College life I have dreamt of. What I wanted was a normal College life, where we can wear uniforms, attend the lectures held by professors, tease them, make new friends, bunk classes, make troubles, be caught red-handed, and stood in front of the principal. But no, the College life I got is far far from my expectations, though knowing my position I was very well aware that I would end up in elite college, but this one, definitely was not one even in my nightmares. but alas I ended up exactly in the only college where I despise going.

A large sigh escaped from me thinking of my plight.

Still hoping for a miracle? my friend asked.

Miracles do not happen just like that, we have to make them happen. with a self-confident smug on my face. Sany’s trail of the question was interrupted by the announcement bell. The whole building echoed. My friend patted my shoulder and gestured to get up and join the crowd. I looked at her with my twinkling eyes and replied, There won't be a need for me to join them.

She angled her head and looked at me suspiciously, What do you mean by that? What did you do? her voice grew in surprise, and asked, You didn’t attend the session. It is 80% of a question and 20% of a statement that she doesn’t even believe it. But before I reply her, she itself continued, But that's not possible, if you didn’t  attend the sessions, your name would have been displayed on the announcement board and all your class activities would be suspended till you attend the sessions and..and.. your parents’ representative would have visited the Principal. But but... Sany scratched her head and added, no such things had happened, which means you attended, don’t you? "she pouted her lips in confusion.

Don’t overthink yourself, I did attend the session, but I am not going to be matched, I replied with confidence, relieving her from the misery.

I can feel my best friend’s suspicion in her eyes. but with a little smile, I stroked her hair playfully without answering her burning question. It is not yet time to answer her question. I decided.  Although she disliked a lot of things in this college, the one main thing she despised is Matching Session. These sessions are available only for the elite students,  which means the richest of the riches and not for the other students. The students who are eligible for these sessions, have to attend the sessions, like written tests and oral tests, which are conducted by the advanced AI robots which are the upgraded version of their robot professors. The written tests vary for each student, there won't be the same set of questions, the questions are mainly to understand the personality,  priorities, and temperament of the individual. Each question paper is a unique one. Next is the oral test, which is just the same set of questions for all the students, like what is your favorite color, food, hang-out place, brand, and the expectations in the partner. The answers to both the tests will be fed to the specialized AI program. After some complex algorithm, the AI program will give a list of Girls and Boys names. Sometimes the set contains a Girl name matched with multiple boys' names or vice-versa. It is very rare to get a single match that is, one girl is matched with one boy. And it is utmost never happened that it came without a match. Every selected elite student has a single or multiple matches. Once the list is generated, it would be announced in the auditorium for the participated students, and later, it would be announced to the other students in the Central Hall on the digital TV which is used for general announcements. The general announcement is more of information to the other students to know who is being matched with whom so that they will know the pairing. I feel it is more like a warning to the other students not to mess with other possible pairs. This is one of the many elite features this campus can offer to its students. The prospective matched profiles will be sent to their parents. The next 2 years of college life will be given for the people to get know each other, by the third year starting they should confirm the pairing. The confirmation should come not only from the parents and the couple but also from the board of directors from all the chains of the business both the families held. Thinking of this stupid process, a bitter expression clouded my face. For others, it might be a better arrangement to find a partner than marrying a person who is a stranger. But not for me. My chin raised in the chair in determination. I do not hate arranged or love marriage, it is just that I do not want it to be planned. I am of the belief that Love and Marriage should be happening on their own and not to be planned. We cannot choose the parents and the family we are born to. But the rest we can choose. And I am not going to give up on my right to choose either. Regarding my studies, being the only girl in my family, from my childhood I was always into jewelry design. Since my family’s major business is also Jewellery, I didn’t get a chance or didn’t have any interests other than Jewellery so it didn’t go against the norms that I had been set to follow. Next to my friends, in this matter, my parents didn’t restrict me at all. I was given full freedom in making my own friends, though  I was instructed to avoid bad influence, they never interfered in my dealings with my friends. Though one of my best friend’s families has only 2 businesses running in gemstones and though their lineage is not from a wealthy background, my parents didn’t object me from making friends with her. Apart from her, the other two of my best friends are from a similar background as mine. Now the next one is choosing a partner. Like any other family, my parents also want to find the best possible groom for me and a support system for our businesses. If I would have known this, I would have definitely refused to join this school. But how effective my refusal would be, I was not so sure of it now. Though
