Blind Dates For Lonely Gorgons - Laura Greenwood

    One

    Thalia

My glasses slip down my nose where I'm looking down at the two mugs of tea I'm carrying. I wrinkle my nose to try and make them go back into place. If I enter the room with them not covering my eyes properly, then my best friend would be in big trouble.

I put my back to my bedroom door and push through. Close your eyes, I call out, trusting that she'll follow instructions.

I turn slowly and squint my eyes just in case. I'll take any precautions I can take to minimise the risk of turning Michaela into stone. And I've been managing that since I was old enough to understand what I am and how my gorgon powers work.

Satisfied her eyes are closed, I set the mugs down on my desk and push my glasses up my nose so they're sat more snuggly against my face. So long as she doesn't look me directly in the eyes while I'm not wearing them, my magic won't work on her. I'm not precisely sure how the glasses work. They've been part of me for as long as I can remember. My parents probably explained how it all worked at some point, but I can't remember it.

Is it safe to open them again? Michaela asks.

    Mmhmm.

She opens her eyes and smiles at me. Glasses fall down?

I nod. She gets it. She wears them herself, though just for bad vision rather than anything magical. Sometimes I envy her, but then I remember she has her own magical problems to deal with.

Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to live without them, she says, touching her dark round frames. But it's such a strange concept that I'm not sure I'd be able to last more than a day.

I would. I've dreamt about it my whole life. I sigh wistfully. But it's never going to change.

You don't know that. There are witches and warlocks coming up with new treatments for magical maladies every day, Michaela counters.

But my problem isn't a magical malady, it's just my inborn magic.

They have people working on something to help vampires come out during the day, I'm sure they're trying to find a way for gorgons to stop turning people into stone.

True, but there are a lot more vampires than there are gorgons.

I don't think that's any reason for them not to be researching things. If they can help one person, then it's a good thing.

I repress a sigh. There's no use pointing out to her that most people aren't as fundamentally good as she is. Just because she thinks it's a worthy cause to help people like me, it doesn't mean that other people do. Far from it. My people have been struggling for years, and we're lucky not to still be in hiding like some of the other dangerous supernaturals.

I pick up my cup of tea and blow across the top of it. It's still too hot to drink, but I want something to do with my hands to break the slight tension in the air. I love Michaela, but sometimes she's too naive for the world.

Have you seen the event the student union is putting on for Valentine's Day? Michaela asks as she reaches out for the other mug.

She seems to have realised the topic of conversation needs changing, but somehow I don't get the impression this is going to be any better.

I haven't, I respond warily. I avoid everything that has the words Valentine's Day in the title of it. Not because I have anything against it, but because it makes me feel more lonely than ever.

Being a gorgon isn't very fun. Particularly when it comes to trying to have a love life. People tend to be put off by the idea of a steamy makeout session ending up with them turned into stone.

"It's a blind date thing. Everyone fills out a questionnaire and then they match
